so inspired by everyones 500pt battle reports I have decided to write my first list using legions of azgorh.
daemonsmight lvl 1, with dragonhelm and channeling staff
10 IG HW/S with champ + banner
10 IG HW/Swith champ + banner
rocket launcher
500pts extactly.
any thoughts?
MadHatter:
Interesting, however I think with just one lvl 1 Daemonsmith its rare you dont have enough dice! I have no experience with the channeling staff but getting higher spells of might be worth it!
I’d drop the champs for musicians though
Depending on what your gonna face the Deathshrieker or Magmacannon choice is hard, in my meta the MC is far supirior to the DS. The dispelscroll is a gamewinner
small battles are over in very few turns is my experience! Ruby ring was Zantromm’s suggestion to me
Please let us know how this list works out!
gashnag:
Lore of fire w/ ruby ring is a must at 500pts, two fire ball attempts per magic phase!
torn:
To be honest I didn’t realise how it worked. I assumed I would still only be able to cast 1 spell. Would I still be able to shoot in shooting phase?
torn:
Ok so I played my first game with this list against stews night goblins. I took the channeling rod and dragon helm instead of the ruby ring, but next time if i have the points it will definately be ruby ring. I found at 500pts with a lvl 1 each it was really easy to dispel everything because your not risking miscasts and you can basically roll all your dice if your opponent can only cast 1 spell.
So I won the game twice in the first 2 turns by causing mass panic with the death shreiker. But we pretended that didnt happen and carried on. The goblins were a block of 40 spearmen with a lord, 22 archers (2x11) with a fanatic, 10 spiders and a lvl 1 shaman.
The spiders got smashed in 1 round of combat against one of my IG units, they did not damage and I killed 6. Hand weapon and shield seems to be a great defensive combination with our ws4 t4 core troops.
The fanatic came out of the archers 3 inches, then in the next turn it went 7 the other way and killed an archer.
Eventually the daemonsmith was charged and killed by the goblin lord in the spear block, which ran through and killed the rocket crew on the next turn. I charged the spears, then the archers got me in the back. My unit which killed the spiders was in the middle of nowhere after persuing them for miles. I generally killed more goblins than i lost dwarfs but eventually lost on combat res because of being charged in the back.
Result, first game first win
but if I had missed with my rockets It might have been a very different story.

I played night goblins again today. this time we upped it to 800 pts.
my list
lv2 daemonsmith w/ enchanted shield and talisman of protection, death
magma cannon
10 x IG w/ blunderbuss
10 x IG w/ hw and shield, with banner and musician
11 x IG same as above
The night goblins had 3 big blocks of 40 with full command, the middle unit had a goblin warlord (not night goblin) and a BSB. He kept the other 2 blocks 7" away so if he lost this block he wouldnt panic the others. He also had a big boss on giant squig that was like a missile to my daemonsmith.
I rolled fate of bhuna (ring sting experience?) and the -1 str -1 t spells.
So I managed to shoot the giant cave squig with the blunderbusses on the way past but only do 1 would, and get the -1 s/t spell onit before it hits my daemonsmith. My magic items let me survive the combat and I manage to bhuna it off in the next turn. Casting didnt go very well for me, even spells i cast were mostly with 1’s and 2’s, but my opponent not having a phase (he had ruby ring but broke it turn 1) really helped.
The magma cannon hit every turn. It did a lot of damage but the 12" bubble ld9 with re-rolls kept the goblins coming. I shouldhave expected this after the panic fest we had last time. I managed to knock little bits off the units with shooting but not enough and when I got into combat my troops were to outnumbered too win any combats even if i got more kills. In fact 1 unit ran when i got 3 kills and he got none.
Stars of the show were the blunderbuss unit who managed to hold off the warboss and BSB for 4 or 5 rounds of combat before finally fleeing. Shooting wise 12" range and only being str 3 is probably not worth 18pts per model. I2 does suck a bit and im thinking I might as well just have great weapons.
Eventually my caster got charged by a block and he lost on resolution despite not suffering any wounds. I think he needs to sit in a bunker to stop this happening. I ended up only having the magma cannon left on turn 6 and even though some of the goblin units were very much weakened (1 down to 1 model) I didnt finish any off so only had the 2 characters for victory points so a major loss for me.
So next time, drop the blunderbuss, Have 1 bigger unit of IG instead of 2 small ones, a bunker for mage, even if its hobgoblins so i can put banner/musc in there, and a magma cannon and rocket launcher. I might find myself up against more squigs next time.
Time of Madness:
Your list is illegal as you can only spend 125pts on heros at the 500pt level.
At 500pt games shooting/magic wins games.
You may be better off switching the hand weapon shield guys out for some fireglaives (S5 in combat is nice as well).
This is what I would run.
Daemonsmith (General)
- Enchanted shield
- Ruby Ring
10 Infernal Guard
- Fireglaives
20 Hobgoblins
- Musician
- Bows
1 Deathshrieker
Gives you the minimum 3 units you need. Keep the smith near the shrieker with his 2+ save and 2 fireballs a turn. You then have 30 shots from the fireglaives/hobgoblins per turn as well.

sorry that was a typo error, i meant to write from 500 to 800. We are gradually upping the points as we get more familiar with 8th and get more models painted.
I did toy with ruby ring but I didnt think it was needed on a lvl2. Im not sure if death is right against goblins but it sure helps if you can take the characters out of the big units.
MadHatter:
Great reports, very interesting to read about facing goblins. Makes me think about the battle in Tamurkhan. Anyhow just a heads up on the magebunker you planned, the Daemonsmith can’t join hobgoblins, think it’s under the contempt rule. I’m getting more and more fond of the Deathshrieker myself, I want to combine it with Doom and Darkness :hat
