[Archive] Making hanging blood drops?

Admiral:

A friend of mine recently asked after a technique for creating hanging blood drops on miniatures. I’ve seen something extremely tedious on a Golden Demon entry involving a human hair and a fine drop of super glue, but there must be less insane ways to do it, right?

Thanks in advance for advice! :cheers

torn:

Im not sure if it would be possible but really thin fuse wire and green stuff should do a similar thing. Im not 100% sure what you mean by a ‘hanging’ blood drop, I would need to see an example.

Admiral:

Nice idea, torn! I’ll further it to my mate. As for hanging blood drops, it’s hard to find a reference picture with a quick search, but something like this yet upside down is what he have in mind:

Hanging/dripping, as opposed to blood drops gliding down surfaces.

Dînadan:

Have you thought about googling for tutorials on drool/spittle; should be the same principle (save for colour)

Admiral:

Thanks for the tip, Dînadan! I was about to read a study text when my friend asked about it, so I just posted a question here and went on with reading. During a Google search for “spit drool miniatures tutorial” this one showed up. Case closed?

Dînadan:

Looks good - you could either paint it red after it dries, or possibly try mixing red ink into the glue before using the technique.

Grimbold Blackhammer:

A human hair will work. Glue it to the model and then add one drop of super glue and let it run down. Lastly add a tiny bit of red to the string and it will mix with the glue. It takes practice.

Nicodemus:

I’ve made small blood drips and drool gobs with green stuff before. The initial ball of GS needs to be very small. Pinch one end and roll it into a tip so that you have a trumpet shape that is rounded at the opposite end. Make sure that the shape is stubbier than you want at this stage. Use a little super glue on your model where the drip will hang from and carefully attach the tapered end, then with a wetted sculpting tool carefully draw/pull the rounded end down and away from where it is attached. These are fragile though, and I’ve broken some off multiple times while painting.

I think a piece of fine jeweller’s wire could work inside the GS too, but haven’t tried it.

Thanks for your advice, Grimbold and Nicodemus. I’ll further them to my friend.

This guy is the Lord of All Hobbying. He makes basically everybody look like a rank amateur. Most stuff can be found on his site, including a blood drop tutorial.

Ben Saunders:

I’ve not tried it myself, but Lord Borak posted a drool tutorial elsewhere which I’m sure could be adapted:
