[Archive] Mantic Greater Obsidian Golem

Dînadan:

The recent Mantic newsletter contains a pic of their upcoming Greater Obsidian Golem:

Could make for a good K’daii Destroyer if you like the aesthetic.

Zhatek The Weird:

That is actually a really sweet model nice find.

tjub:

Like it, but no more Kdaiis for me… :stuck_out_tongue:

Thommy H:

Could make for a good K'daii Destroyer
Yeah, it's a pretty amazing coincidence.

Timothy Archer:

I honestly think he looks a bit ridiculous. I like some of abyssal dwarfs from mantic, but their late attitude towards lost players worried about AOS is kind of petty and not honorable.

Thommy H
Definitely a coincidence.  In now way whatsoever was it pre-planned as such or designed as a money grab from disenchanted GW fans. *looks a rounds shiftily for GW spies*

;P

Being serious, note I added the qualifier 'if you like the aesthetic' - it obviously designed to fill the hole left by a lack of an official Destroyer, but only work if you like the aesthetic (which I don't ;) ).

Timothy Archer
To be fair, the only reason GW don't pull such stunts is because they labour under the illusion that they and only they are the entirety of the hobby. ;P

GW is a faceless and arrogant company now
But it is not really honorable to try to use the fear of the player in order to sell them the same soup , not very "chevaleresque" in my humble opinion.

And lets face the truth, mantic has a lot of work to do if they want to take the throne
Starting with improving the quality of the details on their mini is the good path to take, not playing those stupid fear games

Mantic aren't playing any fear games. They're just giving people a better alternative than selling their armies.
They're opening their doors to the players GW shut the door on.

cornixt:

Apart from their amusing gold statue and offer of army lists for all Warhammer armies in their Warhammer copy, what have Mantic done?

Timothy Archer:

this is your point of vue Vex . I go everyday to see the jokes on mantic FB , and they are really obvious

and i just think:

High road / Low road

if you play on the low road you dont Worth better than your opponent

and dont forget all the wonderfull minis GW used to produce

its not because a compagny is ugly now than you have to forget what they have done for you in the past

so far what mantic have done …

approximatly nothing if you compare …

Timothy Archer:

you are absolutely free to compare those compagnies on the same level .
but the fact that the sad players , are really quick to applause with both hand
when a " savior " pop-up with the desire to avenge them
just to realise later that they are absolutely the same

i will not go further on this road.

About a day after (maybe even same day as) the pics for the angel Sigmarines leaked, Mantic ran a caption contest on their FB page where the pic was of some of their elohi (ogre sized angel guys); now to be fair, it was the fans (including myself) that cracked jokes comparing to the Sigmarines not Mantic (and the winner was one that didn't involve GW jokes), but to be unfair, they almost cirtainly knew that's what would happen and the timing and specific pic used is an extremely unlikely as a coincidence rather than as them seizing an opportunity. To be fair again though, seizing opportunities is just good business sense :P

Dînadan:

Also, regarding this mini in particular, considering how long it takes to get a mini in production, that the stats were in the 1st ed Abyssal Dwarf list for years and (unless I’m mistaken) it’s been produced as part of the KoW2 Kickstarter (and this the design dates back to last year), this isn’t really a case of Mantic preying on the fear of panicking ex-GW fans; the mini was coming out at this time anyway, so unless Mantic have spies within GW and knew about AoS well over a year in advance, it’s just a coincidence that the release coincides with AoS.

Fuggit Khan:

I really, really like this model…and yes, it was part of a kick starter from a year ago (which sadly I missed out on).

I’m going to buy it once it’s available, I think it will make for a pretty cool unit filler with some conversion work.

:hashut

*rolls eyes*

Zanthrax:

I am a fan.

I think it might be time to retire my giant robot with this bro as my destroyer.

Doombeard:

Sweet model! I’m glad they ditched the mottled bump map texture they were doing on the smaller Obsidian Golems, looked to much like chiselled flint didn’t really make sense as Obsidian is more of a glass-like smooth stone in my head, and it just over complicated they sculpt and made it look too ‘busy’. This guy you can actually enjoy his nice flat planes and straight lines, looks a lot more like a Trollblood from PP which are awesome models

edriarr blackleaf:

I quite like the greater golem, from what I can see so far, would make a good elemental for any dungeon bash game. A much better miniature than the first golem, that always looked a bit funky to me.

Thanks for posting this Dinadan, thats two upcoming mantic releases I fancy snapping up. The other is the Forest Wardens treeman creatures they revealed on their blog last week… nice kindling for my smelting furnace.

Blonde Beer:

Looks amazing. Might be a bit to cartoony for some CD armies but I love it.
