[Archive] map campaign starting up

LumpinCroop:

Hello All!

My local gaming group is starting up a map campaign using material from the General’s Compendium.

We’re going to play 6/7th edition as that is what the majority of everyone owns.

I’m going to be playing my Chaos Dwarfs. My brother will be playing his Dwarfs. We also have people playing Dogs of War, Orcs and Goblins and Lizardmen.

We’re going to be mixing in skirmish games leading up to regular size battles.

I will try and post some pictures and write-ups once we begin in earnest.

:hat off

Bassman:

6th/7th edition?

If so are you going with Ravenin Hordes Cds?

LumpinCroop:

I was going to use the Ravening Hordes “get by” list. My gaming buddies want me to try out the GT armybook.

I’m looking through that list to see what I need to improvise.

Time of Madness:

I think it would be more viable to tailor the generals compendium to 8th edition rather then playing 6th/7th.

Has anyone in your group played 8th edition? If so there are a lot of subtle changes which makes it hard to move back and forth between editions (easy to get the rules mixed up).

Thommy H:

And 8th is much better in every way, to be honest. It’s a much more balanced and fun game, and the newest Armies books are all great.

None of us have 8. Most of us don't have the money to get it right now either.

except for the scenery rules, too many glitches in there (I'm thinking about the WE 'free forest' that might kill it's occupants as soon as they're about the enter or leave it), and as a consequence, the ridiculous nitpicking about true line of sight that I've had to endure allready...

otherwise, 8th is truly the way to go!

Thommy H:

You know the mysterious terrain rules are optional, right? Just treat forests as Dangerous Terrain for cavalry, monstrous cavalry and chariots.

I also don’t get the problem with true LOS, but then that’s always the issue with rules that are perfectly intuitive when in the hands of those determined to squeeze every last bit of advantage out of them.

Uhmmm... no I didn't actually. Anyhow, nice... thanks for making me privvy to that one! (I really should make an effort reading through the entire book, and not just follow what others tell me) :cheers

When we play at my house (which is one of the major arenas for me and my friends), we don't really make a fuss about it.
But oh holy Hashut!... Playing at the store or a semi-related place, against 'others', you get ridiculous quotes such as "I can see their feet through the underbrush of that forest". They will bend, press their faces to the table, shine with laserlights and do whatnot, just to be able to prove their right.
Most of the time, I just 'zone out', and go for a quick smoke then. I've been playing this game for too long to be fracked up the... you know what by a 16 year old that really wants to win, no matter what.
I've always played primarily for fun, and only then for the win... which is exactly why I don't really like to go to tournaments.

Anyhow LumpinCroop, I hope you enjoy your campaign. I've spent many a good year playing 6th edition... IMO, it still stands out to me as one of the best GW has ever produced.

Well, in fairness, there isn't a big line in bold that says "these rules are optional!" or anything - it's more that it just vaguely says something like, "any terrain can be Mysterious..." and assumes you'll probably want it to be. You can just ignore it all though.
