Hello everyone! I wish to present you my first complete sculpt! Tell me what you think!

I know that some things look a little off, but they are all things that will be fixed. I know that it looks like a lot of chainmail, but beard/hair is going to cover most of it. I haven’t done the arms yet, but I think Im going to do the scale mail look (like on the skirt) on the sleeves. Well, anyways, comment away. Any and all suggestions appreciated!

I like it so far! There’s some good details coming out and it seems like you have a good handle on where its headed. I’d be eager not to cover up all the details in beard - having a bit of contrast in textures goes a long way toward a good mini, IMHO.
What are you using as an armature? Wire? GS?

Basically, the armature is GS and wire. I started off by sculpting the feet directly onto the base, then I drilled a hole in each and placed wire in. I sculpted GS around them and then made the skirt. When I was done with that, I drilled a hole in the top of the skirt and put wire in for the basis for the torso. It's worked out pretty well so far! Thanks for the comment!

Good stuff, keep on going! You can tell that the time and patience required for a quality model are being observed, can hardly wait to see the finished product, keep us posted!!
AGPO:
Really nice work. I’m working on and off on my first sculpts. Once I get platemail down, I’m done, but I just can’t seem to master the technique
Kera foehunter:
thats cool i like his cool shoesand nice armmor
Ishkur Cinderhat:
Thats an impressive start, and even more so for a first sculpt!
Hammerhand:
looking good so far! Very impressive, keep it up, let’s see it finished and painted…

Do you really need an armature for a dwarf? I can see the arms needing one if they are out, but the body is pretty much a blob so doesn’t need any support.

You really don't. I just use them on a few sections so I have something to sculpt around so I don't have to worry about the GS moving around and distorting while I sculpt.

I guess that depends on what you want to do with it. Personally, I use an armature to get the proportions down before committing clay to it, and to stop the clay moving around when I do. For complex posing, I think it helps to have the armature around to envision where the limbs go.

I dont think i have ever used an armature for a model :S
All i do is make the basic shape outof milliput, then put on the details with teh GS/BS mix (YES GRNDL!!! :P)
torn:
what milliput do you use?
i bought some of the cheap greeny grey milliput just to have a bit practice with and i found it to be awful for anything other than putting little rocks or paving slabs on bases.
armatures do greatly help with proportions and stop gravity pulling the putty and making it droopy.
xbullzx:
cool
i want to see it when its done

Looks good so far however the chainmail doesn’t look to convincing. Don’t get me wrong as I know how hard it is but now you’'ve done ‘holes’ next to each other and under, without the rings (chainmail) actually connecting.
Take a look at this PDF my mate Ramon Laan has made. On page 21 I think is a small explanation about sculpting chainmail.

The rest is worth checking out also if you are a starting sculptor!

yea thanks you Obsidian for the missing link hehe
