[Archive] Need some advice for my color scheme

Jasko:

Dear warmongers,

I could use some advice on the color scheme of the upcoming Legion of Jaskorh.

As all proper Dwarfs, Chaos Dwarfs are like 90% armour and beard, I like that. For the beards I will go with the classic black, the skin will be a pale greenish-grey. The main armour color shall be copper, with brass and/or bronze highlights.

I’ve used the citadel paint app and they offer quite nice color combinations for those:

copper

brass

bronze

So far, so good. But I need another highlight color, for the occasional piece of cloth, some magic effect and whatever else needs to stand out but is not metal.

If you look up color harmonies, I do like analogous colors for my highlight, like I did with my Night Goblin Auxiliaries. There is a nifty app for iOS called paint picker, which has the colors by all major companies included and lets you find a color scheme based on color theory. I did this for Hashut Copper (since I expect this to be the dominant color overall) and the app came up with this

It’s actually quite interesting, since the two suggested colors for analogous colors are a greyish green (I anyway want to use something vaguely like this for the skin) and basically pink. What do you think about pink? I think I could also switch that for violet, subtly highlighted to pink. It does have a certain Chaos-Dwarfiness (I mean look how beautiful Zharvatta Circuss is!), so I think it might work. I know I just have to paint up some models to really see how it looks in reality, but I thought I get your opinion beforehand :cheers

Admiral:

This is a good idea. Violet highlighted to pink will stand out well as a spot colour. Go for it on a test model. :cheers

tjub:

I agree with Admiral, go for a test model!

Jasko:

Thanks guys, yeah test models it will be!

I am not sure though I have the mental strength to “waste” even one model for mere testing, they are all precious  I think I have to use some old Space Marines or something for that :hat off

Abecedar:

I was originally Helm and Mask TTD, so I used the 4th Ed Big Hats as my test models.

Turquoise can be a great tiny hi-light addition.

Thanks!
I use turquoise on my Night Goblins, and while a part of me would like a unifying element, the larger part wants the armies to stay distinct from another, so turquoise or sky blue unfotunately are not available for my Chaos Dwarfs :)

Abecedar:

If your okay at fiddly painting you could try for proper gems,  Maybe Rubies.  They are beyond my day-to-day efforts.

Yeah.  Turquoise is just a rock really.  that’s more appropriate for gobbo’s

Emeralds (all of them) come directly after eyes on my list of "just cannot do it" :s

Jasko:

So, I’ve been watching some videos by a great hobbyist on Youtube, Goobertown Hobbies. His videos are pretty nice, he has a very calm style. His batch paint videos are right on the spot for my own projects.

Even better, he has a little video on planning paint schemes with powerpoint (I know, who would have guessed?). I will definitely do this with an Iron Guard model and plan my next steps before I slap some paint on miniatures.

I think a lot of us are very visual. Put up a test model!
