[Archive] New CD Army - With a Steampunk "Look & Feel"

Arcuballis:

Well, my friends, after introducing myself on the new members thread, I would like to share with you some ideas I’m nursing for my new CD army.

First of all, I’m a completely newbie regarding Warhammer Fantasy. I do know something about the fluff (I’ve read all the Gotrek & Felix novels) but never actually played a game. Secondly, I’m much more a modelist than a gamer, so my main goal was to make an army that looks good in the tabletop and have fun, much more than actually winning all the games…

By having a 40k Ork army and a Chaos one, I’ve an endless assortment of bitz from those two armies, and upon reading all the tidbitz I could get my grubby hand into about the Chaos Dwarfs, I sumrised that they have a very industrial tendency, know the steam technology like their “nicer” counsins and maybe even combustion engines, coupled with “daemon” powered machinery. Thus I will do a very “Steampunk” oriented army, with many smoke bleching engines of destruction and mayhem! :slight_smile:

My ideas so far are the following:

- Make the Earthshaker Cannon to look like a smaller version of the Empire Steam Tank, only meaner and more evil looking;

- Make the Hobbo Bolt Throwers look like some sort of gunpowder harpoon cannons;

- Have a nice converted Ogre Ironguts unit with the CD look and feel, curly beards and maybe an Ork powerclaw on one of them;

- Have the CD Lord riding atop a “walking mechanical throne”, instead of using the bearers on the corners put some 40K Dreadnought legs under the platform;

- Put some 40k powerfists for Heroes and Metal Wizards, coupled with a portable steam generator on their backs;

- Make the Hobbo units using turbans for a more middle-east look (well, actually I’ve already done that…);

- Using unit fillers for some nice modelling oportunities and save some money on the actual models;

- Upon reading the Blood Bowl stuff, I saw that there are characters wielding steam powered chainsaws (there was a gobbo one and a dwarf with a death roller), and I do have LOTS of chainsaws lying around, both from 40k Orks (bigger and cruder) and Chaos SM (smaller but with Chaos iconography), but mayber making the CD wielding such weapons maybe a little too much… What do you think?

I already have the BFSP box and an Ironguts box, and will start working on the models today!

In the meanwhile, your feedback will be much appreciated, with suggestions and criticisms over the ideas above, and please share your ideas also for what you would like to see on a steampunk oriented army…

Cheers! :cheers

Khan!:

Sounds wicked. I’m all about the steampunk, so your ideas sound cool to me - especially the walker-throne and CHAINSAWS! Although I’m concerned that the use of ork/chaos marine chainswords/axes might just be too big on CDS… You may have to cut them down a bit unless you’re going for a really exaggerated effect.

grunts:

brilliant! I do agree with Khan! that the chainsaws might be somewhat oversized, although extremely cool. Can’t wait to see the gunpowder harpoon cannons!

Kera foehunter:

great ideas !!! Terban wearing hobos this sound cool!!!

wallacer:

CD are well suited to Steampunk.

Maybe instaed of using Dreadnought legs you could convert a Sentinel or Penitent Engine to be your throne.

Swissdictator:

I’d have to say you picked one of the best armies, if not the best, for steampunk.

You may have to fiddle with getting them lined up right so it’s two handed… but you could make chainsaws count as great weapons perhaps… or use them on Bull Centaurs.

Unit fillers are nice, be it ogres, a cool mini-diorama, or a few less Chaos Dwarfs on the base doing something awesome.

Good luck man, I can’t wait to see this army! Especially the Earth shaker and Hobgoblins. You might want to post a tutorial for the Hobgoblins as that does sound awesome.

slev:

The 40K weapons have a precedent if you look at the older books and the statements about the original version of Lustria (before Nigel Stilman ruined it).

In fact, I managed to squeeze a power fist into my army book project, along with an old-school Slafn flamer.

Tharzhul Firehelm:

Great idea, i’m looking forward to seeing your results :slight_smile:

Arcuballis:

Well, thanks for the feedback! Much appreciated! :hat off

@Khan, Grunts, Slev: It’s nice to hear that you guys did not find the chainsaws “too techy”! I will make a test model and show here to see what you think…

@Kera & Swissdictator: I will try to post some pictures of the turban wearing Hobbos, and maybe doing a tutorial… I changed their shields also with the normal Gobling shields made from wood and interwoven twigs (spelling?) for a more middle-east look.

@Wallacer: Hummmm, I don’t know… The Sentinel legs are too high and spindly… I think that the Dread ones, being more stubby looking will be more in tune with our chaos stunties. :cheers

Well, now for everyone… Bad news: unfortunatedly the guys here in Brazil will not accept the Chaos Dwarf list… Apparently you could not find the army list anymore on the GW site, both the US and UK ones. Altough I have the PDF with me, there is no more links to it on the site (at least I was completely unable to find one, and the links presented here in this site are broken), so to avoid troubles with some troublemakers we have here, who try to use older lists and such, our small gaming community ruled out the CD…

BUT…

No one here has any trouble with “count-as” and thematic armies at all (in fact is is encouraged), and I will still do my CD army but using Dwarf rules or Empire ones… Since I’m starting the army now, no big troubles with not being able to field already assembled and painted minis. The problem is choosing between the two… Could you help me with this?

Dwarfs list “count as” Chaos Dwarfs:

Pros:

- Units have the same movement and overall characteristics;

- Anvil of Doom - great conversion potential

- Girocopter - great conversion potential;

- Lots of whacky War Machines with great conversion potential;

Cons:

- No slaves, which are an essential part of a CD army

- No way to represent a Lammasu or a Great Taurus;

- No magic - I like magic!

Empire list “count as” Chaos Dwarfs:

Pros:

- Steam Tank - AWESOME conversion potential;

- Steam Tank - MORE THAN AWESOME conversion potential;

- War Altar - again, AWESOME conversion potential;

- DOW Birdmen of Catrazza - did anyone said “A whole unit of Chaos Dwarfs on girocopters?”

- Hobbos can be used as Spearmen and Archers (apart from the points cost and Ld, the stats are the same);

- Handgunners as Blunderbusses;

- Has magic (and I like magic…)

- Pegasus or Dragon to represent a Lammasu or a Great Taurus;

- Steam Tank - have I said “Steam Tank” already?;

Cons:

- Different stats for movement in the case of dwarfs;

- No good way to represent the Chaos Dwarf core Warriors (Greatswords for Immortals, maybe);

Well, all in all, the two options have a lot of pros but some big nasty cons… I’m more inclined toward the Empire one, altough more unusual… What do you think? Again, comments, critics and suggestions are more than welcome!

Cheers! :cheers

minty:

I dunno, the empire seem realy cool, but play nothing like CDs due to m4 te, rather than vice-versa, and low LD. On the other hands, the birdmen (maybe a whole unit with jetpack:)) STank (whirlwind anyone?)

Oh, and don’t forget about DOW for dwarves. the guys here use the kislev allies for there hobbos, with ungols becaoming hobbo warriors, winged lancers as wolf boys, and gryphon legion as better wolf boys. DOW works too

If you want to go for the slavedriver/steamounk army make the empire ‘men’ deamonbots (handgunners) and slaves (combat troops, archers), and use DOW dwarves, (who are special choices) as your dwarf warriors, a halfling hotpot could be something wacky like a deamon oil flingger ect.
