I was lucky enough to buy this for $100.00 a couple years ago and just re found it. I really want to play CD but have no idea where to start. I read up on them and I find there is mixed ways you can play them. Gun line or assault when you try to split the difference you lose out. Also I don’t have hobgoblins I don’t know if I’ll be able to play the close combat CD. So what do you think I can do with this at 2000 or higher pts.
It’s true that you can get a very strong list by doing only gunline or only close combat. I think that’s rather boring and always do both at once. Field som warmachines for bringing down enemy numbers and then crush the remaining with blocks of infantry in close combat.
I don’t have any hobgoblins yet and I still win most of my games. So don’t worry too much abouy this. I’ll offer advice bases purely on the stuff you have.
Keeping the style
Keeping with the old style is perfectly legal, just tell your opponnent. So I suggest you use your small amount of blunderbuss as fireglaives. And your earthshaker cannon as a Hellcannon (hellcannon looks to modern for a big hat army).
Armylist
I’m on my phone, so make due with some pointers and not a complete list.
Deathshriker is cheap and good. Bring down monsters with one rocket and low toughness enemies with template.
Use Earthshaker as Hellcannon. I always bring one! Crazy powerful when hitting, hard to take out due to wardsave and handlers (very hard to cannon snipe it). Can hold a flank and do massive damage in close combat.
Include 11 fireglaives with a muscician and champipn with naptha bombs. (Use blunderbuss models and two command models). No standard. Take out flyers, fast cavalry. Muscician for better reforming. Naptha Bombs for a better short rsngr stand and shoot (loosing one of the -1 to hit). Put a daemonsmith here. Lore of fire because fireball has great range. He babysits the warmachines.
4 Bullcentaurs are great. Standard with gleaming pennant for LD re-roll. Can run ahead, redirect enemies, take out warmachines or support your main block with flank charges etc. Fielded 2x2.
28 HW/S infernal guard with full command and Razor Banner for extra punch. Put another daemonsmith or prophet (astrogoth) in here. Use your last standard bearer as a BSB (or convert your castellan) and put him in here. This unit is nasty move. Move forward and break the enemy. Can fight in horde because they are stubborn. Or maybe 6-7 wide as most people go 5 wide. This will maximize you attacks on the enemy depending on if they are on 20mm or 25mm bases.
I have no experience with taurus or lamassu. But I think they are expensive compared to the amount of IG you can have instead.
Get a few games in. Try to fight. And after that see what aspects of the gamd you like in order to expand your army in the right direction.
Alternative ways to go
Field 22+ (I use 24) blunderbusses. With command group and your 9 models you are on 12 correct models. So just fill the back rank with hw/s dwarves and let them be casualties. No problem here, will look good and rule wise your dwarfs still have the hw/s option. Shoot up the enemy and pack a punch in close combat. Will let you try some gunlining, see if it’s the way to go for you. Might even fit on the above 2000+ list.
Keep close to the HW/S unit, so they can work together.
Field two blocks on infantry (on might be the blunderbuss). Make them both stubborn wirh a BSB in one and a Crown of Command in the other. Or simply a BSB in one and plain Castellan in the other.
Dreadquake. Try it out. I don’t like it compared to hellcannon.
Use one BC as a solo running Tauruk.
Try a prophet with the flying carpet. All about placement, but can be a real pain armed with lore of hashut.
Get an old metal flame cannon and use it as magma cannon.
Get some super cheap bsttle for skull oass goblins and see if hobgoblins afee for you at all. Then invest in the real expensive old metal hobgoblins.
Important
You have a great army. It packs a punch no matter what! Play some games, have fun and expand after that. If you want to be real competitive you need to buy some stuff, but with what you have you are fine.
Hope it helps. If needed I’ll smash together some list for you with points and all.
Your advice helps out a lot and thank you for responding so quickly. I actually wasn’t thinking straight last night and left off some models that I just ordered.
So my list now is:
43 warriors
3 full command
5 centaur
9 blunder bust
Astragoth
Lammasu
Taurus
1 rider
3 hobgoblin
1 Sorcerer - prophet
1 castellan
3 daemonsmiths
2 rocket cannon (picked up one more)
1 quack cannon
2 hellcannons (GW Model pointy hat crew
3 magma cannons (dwarf flame cannon with pointy hat crew)
I will have a K’daai Destroyer once I decide what model to make it out of. I feel like its either going to be the Slaughterbrute or stonehorn, But I could do some really cool things with the new Nurgle models.
I have a question about the Centaurs. Since they are the old model and they are only on the Cav bases, how would you feel if someone ran them against you? I am more of a painter and competitive 40k player and only dabble a little into fantasy. So I dont know how the rules stand up for old models to new. If I have to get the bigger bases that’s fine, but the small Centaurs on the big base would just look dumb. My thought was i could double them up on the bases eventually when I get enough to field a lot of them.
Second:
Is the Lammasu or Taurus not worth the points? What list are they good in if any?
Third:
For a gun line army I was kinda going into this direction:
2500pts
Lord
Prophet
Hashut, pistol,Armor of Baz, Talisman of preservation
Heros
Daemonsmith
Dispell Scroll
Daemonsmith
Infernal Castellan
great weapon, shield, Mask of furnace, BSB
Core
25 Infernal Guard
full command, Razor standard
22 Infernal Guard
Full command
Special
Rocket
Magma Cannon
Magma Cannon
Magma Cannon
Rare
K’daai Dstroyer
Fourth
I really dont feel I have enough to do a all in assault CD list. I need more Hobgoblin or more Centaurs to do it I feel.
