[Archive] New to Warhammer, Want to play CD

TheFNG:

So as the title says, I’m new to warhammer. I want to play CDs because they’re a) beautiful sculpts and b) much different from my friends who own every other army between them. I checked locally and the Tamurkhan list is widely accepted. So my question to you is, what are my first 1500 pts?

I’m thinking:

30ish IG w/full command

Magma cannon x2

K’daai destroyer (must have)

Sorcerer

Whatever else…

I’d love your comments and help! Thanks!

Grimstonefire:

Personally I’d drop a magma cannon and take more troops. Or drop the destroyer at 1500.

30 infantry @ 1500 is too few imo.

Nicodemus:

I guess it depends what you’re after. If you’re new to warhammer then presumably there’s some specific aspect that has drawn you to it: the modeling/painting, game play, collecting. Find what it is that appeals to you and then buy what you need to best support that goal. This way, which ever route you take will still play a part in supporting the other areas of the hobby.

One thing I’d suggest is that as you’re new to the Chaos Dwarf army, as well as the hobby, is pick up a variety of models. I don’t play competitively, so I don’t know what the consensus is in terms of numbers of troops, but I’m usually somewhat light on troops with my CD armies. I go with more toys. I think starting out, however, one Magma Cannon and one Death Shrieker Rocket would be a good choice, this way you can learn how they both work and give yourself the flexibility to decide which works best for you. Lots of folks here think the Magma Cannon is the bees knees (I have yet to field mine) but if they’re as good as everyone says then presumably two would be the way to go.

I think two Daemonsmith/Sorcerer models is a good choice as they’re somewhat interchangeable in terms of what they represent, so you could use your Sorcerer to represent a Castellan in a pinch too.

The nice thing for Chaos Dwarf armies is that we’re high points cost, so you won’t be buying many models to get started

Thanks for the quick replies!

So to clarify, i want to be competitive. my friends tend towards the monsters, such as the soulgrinder, hydra, thundertusks, mournfangs, and phoenix (both types). So i want to counter with the coolest (based on the conversions i’ve seen) monster in the game.

Also, i’d prefer to be competent in CC but be strong in the shooting and magic phases. I hope this clarifies.

As for # of troops, is there an ideal balance to attempt to strike?

Thanks1

If he goes monster heavy go with 2 deathshrikers. They are 100 points each and they level monsters.

Also Prophet level 4 with talisman of preservation, Enchanted Shield and Earthing rod is 375 which is exactly 25% of 1500

level 4 with 2+ save and 4+ ward. Yes please!

ClawLeader:

Don’t play to be competitive for that sake only. It will frustrate you to no end. Enjoy the hobby for what it is.
