wallacer:

I think there are 2 different Sphinx builds. A fighty Sphinx and a Magic user Sphinx.

Fallen246:

wallacer
I personally think these are rad, and aren't too big of a step away from the Old Tomb Kings :)

wallacer:

They kind of strike me as being like really scrawny Ushabti.

Fallen246:

Although, fi you read their rules on the sides there:

- Monstrous Beasts (a tad obvious)

- Can turn enemies into sand!

- Come out of the ground!

I just think that’s really cool and fits the theme quite well. Especially when compared to “Snake-Surfers”. Seems a bit… unorthodox?

That and a gigantic Scorpion for a Howdah would be cooler, just IMO.

inkpwn:

Huh, neat, a lot more than I was expecting. What’s with gw and the new trend of releasing a giant beastie for each army? If this continues I can’t wait to see what they release for dwarfs.

Anonymouse:

I like 'em. Especially the details on the sphinx are neat.

nitroglysarine:

Well, i’m ambivalent…

I really like parts of them, but I’m not sure that the models all gell together.

It really does seem that GW is trying to make a large chunky model for each range.

And yeah the sphinx will make and awesome base for a lamamasu, or even maybe a taurus.

Great sculpts, just not sure…

CheTralfara:

I’m pretty sure that the inclusion of a large kit for every range is part of an attempt to make the warhammer version of apocalypse (legendary battles) into something that people actually want to play. That and the sheer badassness and conversion potential of these models.

I love the new sphinx kit. Just absolutely incredible and mind-blowing but I am a total sucker for the huge kits. They give me all sorts of project ideas. I’ve already begun turning the Skaven abomination into a giant plaguespawn and the DreadKnight into a Possessed DreadKnight (count-as soulgrinder).

I think if someone were to add the torso of the Warsphinx to the legs of the Dreadknight, it would make an incredible Necron monsterous creature. Then you have the warsphinx body left over for making a gigantic hellhound of Khorne or even a Slaaneshi beast if you leave the scorpion tail.

The Stalkers are just way too cool and I could totally see them being used in a Necron army as well. They have the Necron body shape going on. Surfing snakes is ashame, because the snakes look wonderful minus the rider. Hopefully the rules will include the option to go riderless, but I doubt it.

As for not updating the skeletons. Why not combine the new Vampire Counts skeletons with parts from the new Tomb Guard kit. The VC skellies have plenty of bare heads, and the clothes they wear (mostly plate-mail) could fit in perfectly with the right paintjob! I don’t think enough people realize how good that would look and how simple it would be (albiet expensive).

Hashut’s Blessing:

Apparently, the Necrosphinx/Warsphinx box comes with such a variety of parts that only the tail is needed for both of them (which actually means you can make two). Also, a free plastic Tomb King? Doesn’t matter if you don’t think it’s great, use it as a unit champion or a prince or something!

I love the Sepulchral Stalkers and think they are thematically beautiful. They come in the same box as the Necropolis Knights (or whatever their name is), which fall flat on their cobra-fan faces, IMO. Cobras, cool - people surfing on them, fail.

Tomb Guard - got no qualms, but for the face masks. Seem a bit muh and more Aztecian or Incan or Mayan to me…

Also, it’s safe to assume that the big “centrepieces” are a theme for future armies. Hellpit Abomination, Arachnarok Spider, Necro/WarSphinx - the last three batches of models had a huge one.

Lastly, I agree with Thommy H about the duality of the boxes (same with Grey Knights). It’s also a cunningly brilliant business plan - rather than selling four different boxes and finding some more popular than others, produce one that will sell as many as those four combined, reducing stock-space, extra production costs and slow-sales. For the customer, it;s great because you can mix and match and everything becomes simpler.

CheTralfara:

That bit about being able to build 2 sphinx from 1 kit can’t be true, they both use the same body. 1 leg is lifting up on the Necrosphinx… I can’t imagine the kit comes with 2 full bodies just for 1 leg difference.

If the rumors about Necrons coming soon are true, I really hope someone does something with those stalkers.  I’d love to see a stalker upper body on Necron legs.

For anyone who is upset about no core skellies, consider this…

I wouldn’t have used the helmet heads and I’d use a tomb guard torso for the champ… but the VC skellies come with a good ammount of bare skull heads. This person also hasn’t added the sheilds yet. But you can see how the bodies work just fine with the scale-mail theme of Tomb King models, this was probably on purpose. Imagine what you will be able to do when combining parts from the Tomb Guard. Also some of the VC Grave Guard great weapons look very scimitar.

Loki:

I like all the models apart from the snake riders, just dont thingk they work at all i do like the stalkers that you can make from that box i think they look awesome, i htink if they had made them living snakes it would have looked better rather than having the bones on the top showing.

The first few items went on pre order today. Looks like om not going to buy the necropolis knights. £33.50 for 3 plastics? No.

nitroglysarine:

@Pyro, hell, that is pricey.

Just notcied that the Sphinx model is cheaper!

Ive really got an urge to dust of my 3000pts Tomb King army and start it up again. Everything needs to be stripped and repainted.

Pyro Stick
That is way to much for just those 3 models , the tomb guard are £25 for 10 just like great swords, and yet the massive cooling looking Sphinx is as you say cheaper , GW really need to think about how they price these things rather than using scatter gun approach they are doing a the mo

nitroglysarine:

Yeah their specials do seem to be on just a bit of a price hike in this edition.

It’s just going to lead to most people converting their own models from base troops (or at least I hope they will)

Necrotique:

The sphinx is showing on GW’s site for me at $83… Not too bad but personally I think all large models should be about $63 at the most.

On this sort of “new models” discussion, does anyone know when the new Vampire Counts will be released? Was considering starting collecting them again, but can’t stand the ghoul models (or the price tag of the OOP ones!)

:cheers

Hashut’s Blessing:

Forgot to mention about wallacer’s comment regarding a fighty and magicky sphinx - one is a character (with toughness 8!) and one is like the stegadon (either a troop filled monster or a hero’s monstrousmount).

As to the bodies thing, I was just going by what the staffer told me, her having seen the sprues. I think the necrosphinx’s body looks thicker, but it may just be me hoping to get two kits out of the one box

Tarrakk Blackhand:

Everything needs to be stripped and repainted.

Pyro
Hmmm...stripped down to bare-bones? :D

I wonder if the Bone Giant and Casket of Souls are still in the new book?

As for Vampire Counts getting a new book upgrade...didn't they just have one in the last 3 years? Or does this matter?

This army makes me think...Turn Me On Dead Man!

Baggronor:

Well, it wouldn't matter if they were more popular (like Orcs) but VCs will be a long way off yet, probably another 2-3 years I imagine. Unless they really keep going at a pace with the new army books. They do need a new book, seeing as the current list is either hideously broken (if you take the GG deathstar) or total rubbish (if you don't take the GG deathstar), but there are other armies that should get their turn.

You could do what I'm doing and revert to TKs. Its a good way to use a lot of the same core troops for 2 armies.

@ Tarrakk, I'm sure the casket is in, not sure if the Giant has been replaced by Mr Heroic-Killing-Blow-Necrosphinx or not.
