[Archive] Number of sorcerers in 8ed

Gabbo:

:hat off

After reading the 8ed rules regarding magic phase, I see every sorceror gives you a 1/6 chance to get an additional power dice (as well as spells according to its level), but base is always 2D6. I don’t see a big advantage of increasing from 2 to 3 or more sorcerors, while the dice pool will be almost the same for increase of spell qty.

I’m thinking in a lvl2 and lvl1 for small battles, and maybe a lvl4 and lvl1-2 for 2000+ pts lists, not aiming at a specific opponent.

How do you play your magic in your lists in 8ed?

Is there something I don’t catch?

Thanks! :cheers

Baggronor:

I run a single Lvl4 in my DEs, and a caster Lord + Vamp + Necro for my VCs.

Its true that the 2D6 power pool makes wizards relatively less useful the more you take… unless you have access to more dice. CDs don’t really have a reliable way of obtaining more dice (the only ones I can think of are Lore of Death and that scroll that generates D6 dice for D3 wounds - not great). Multiple wizards are more worthwhile for certain armies - VCs get Master of the Black Arts, DEs get the Sacrificial Dagger for example, that can help with the variable dice.

secret apprentice:

The biggest benefit i have found from taking multiple wizards is access to more protective scroll variants and a greater selection of spells to increase your tactical posibilities in game. The other benefit is that when some wizards die you are still able to cast.

Da Crusha:

recently I brought 3 wizards to a tournament. the reasoning for this was to have access to more spells. I used a level4 shadow, a level 2 shadow, a level 2 death. I always generated spells for the level 2 shadow first, mostly to suck up spells, so that the level 4 wizard WILL get the spells he needs. I used death magic for sniping characters since many armies rely on characters. I also brought more wizards so that I can bring more arcane items. I found that Chalice of darkness was incredible for the tournament as it really bolstered my magic phase by crippling my opponents defense. I also used the channeling staff, for only 15 points it doubles the chance of channeling. the last one got the dispel scroll, which is especially important against …THE PURPLE SUN! unfortunately whenever someone tries to cast a really important spell, they often throw 5 or 6 dice at it and often get an irresistible force, in which case I can’t dispel it.

Bolg:

In my resend CD games I found that I really liked a level 3 and level 1. the level 3 is great at dispelling (gets a +3 and carries the dispel scroll) het has shadow magic. (the extra effect of shadow is great, cast a lowly not to leathal spell and pop, het out of harms way and might have swapped places with your general who is a bit more killy in combat). the level 1 has Metal, the signature spell is uber great against heavy cavalry. I he faces those he will roll 6PD every chance he gets to get total power. he is cheap ass so the miscast is no problem. He also makes it possible to carry a extra scroll (I like the 4+ ward scroll in combination with magic res1)

elrodogg:

I would rock a pair of level 4’s.  Death and Shadow. I don’t see going solo on a level 4 as working too well. No upgrades necessary besides a dispel scroll on one of them. At 515 points you have an uber magic phase. You can also afford to lose a wizard and still have dispel capacity. Death is just so good on a ld9 wizard because your basic sniper spell you’ll likely have a leadership bonus on any opposing wizard. Back those two up with 3+ ranked unit of dwarfs and some warmachines and you’re all set.

qwe50:

I have a level 4 with shadow and book of ashur +5 :cheers and a level 1 with death/metal/fire and a dispel magic scroll.

Gabbo:

Thanks for your experiences and explanations.

In last battle (still low at 1500 pts) I played a single lvl4 death. Basically due to not read vortex rules I casted purple sun in front of my army, so you can imagine the global panic around that area:o. Anyway death lore gave me a good impression, I want to try again with magic carpet on the sorc and include a lvl2 fire sorc in the next battle.

Alan the evil:

I already played lot of matches in 8 ed (2300 pt - OPEN 8 of FIGW italian format).
Number of sorcerers/wizards is different army by army.

HOW I PLAYED

It’s a couple of years I play only chaos and choas dwarfs.
For chaos’ armies I usually play a 4 level sorcerer lord of tzeench and a 2 level sorcerer ( just to be sure to have hell gate)
I build a for fun army of tzeench with only a 2 level sorcerer with dispel scroll and a lots of combinated saves for spell with magic resistence. pretty good

chaos dwarfs: ALWAYS 4 level sorcerer of death with 4+ save and stability rod.
1 level sorcerer of fire with signature spell and dispel
1 level sorcerer of metal with signature spell power scroll (this one ROCKS!!!)

HOW I SAW OTHER PLAYING (in order of number of matches)

EMPIRE: pope on popemobile and 1/2 scroll caddy
DWARFS: ALWAYS 2 runesmith
BRETONNIAN: a level 2 wizard, a level 1 one wizard and benediction
VC: vampire lord and 1/2 scroll caddy
SKAVEN: grey seer and 1/2 scroll caddy
LIZARD MAN: the biggest, hardest and mainest slann you can use!!!
CHAOS: like I explain above
DE: witch lord and ONE scroll caddy

other army are still a mistery…

grupax:

what about a lvl 4 with 4+ ward & forbidden rod

a lvl2 with chalice of darkness

and another one with powerstone

3d6+2 -d3 powerdice

and d6-d3 dispell dice for the opponent, in combination with death and a good timing it could wipe out all the opponents casters in one go.

Da Crusha:

thats a pretty neat combination. I always just pass up the forbidden rod because of how dangerous it is but with the talisman of preservation it could be a viable tactic… also could wipe out your level 4 :o. oh well, High Risk, High reward.
