[Archive] OK - so The Ultramarines movie

zobo1942:

No one else has said anything, so I’ll start.

I saw this movie a few weeks ago and… didn’t think it was very good.

Anyone else have an opinion?

Thommy H:

I haven’t seen it and don’t intend to because I automatically assumed it wouldn’t be very good. How could it be anything but completely awful?

  • Based on an IP that no one can understand without cliff notes.

  • Written by a Black Library author.

  • CGI.

Hey, I like 40K, but you’d have to be completely insane to spend time watching a movie about it when you could be doing almost anything else with your life.

Grimstonefire:

I intend to buy it when I have a bit more cash, and it’s cheaper.

I fail to see why it should automatically be awful because it’s written by a BL author…?

Ishkur Cinderhat:

Aw that’s a bit harsh indeed, Dan Abnett is a very good author and has produced some of the best 40k novels out there. And anyway I guess it’s just another one of those witty Thommy rants… I mean…

The protagonists are emotionless, psychotic, homicidal, genocidal super soldiers fanatically devoted to defending a far-future Galaxy-wide theocracy based on the worst excesses of the major Abrahamic religions while wearing a cross between full plate armour and a space suit.

…doesn’t that just sound TOTALLY AWESOME?!! \o/

I basically expected this movie to be a total failure though once I had seen the trailer and from what I have read so far the reviews vary between “merely acceptable because it was a first try” and “total disaster”.

The graphics have been criticised to be just as underwhelming as the story and the choice of Chaos Space Marines as antagonists also seems to be a letdown because now it’s just Marines vs Marines when there could have been so much more interesting conflict scenarios. I personally am not going to spend any money on that. It’s probably better invested into a “Clone Wars” season on DVD.

It could have worked if the above loons weren't the leads imo. Had it been based around citizens of the Imperium, with the ever-present space nazis being all oppressive and blowing stuff up in a background role, then it could have been really interesting. But Space Marines themselves as the focus, and the least interesting chapter of all at that... sadly no. The fact that it ended up being Marines vs Chaos Marines pretty much sums up the state of the game too. They could at least have had Tau or Eldar to provide some alternative viewpoints to underline just how crazy the Imperials are, but nooo.

Regarding graphics, its a bit of a tricky one. The only way cgi was going to work was if they had real top end quality all the way through. Anything else was always going to look fatally cheap.

vulcanologist:

Afraid I got bored half way through and switched off. Actually thought the voice acting and graphics weren’t too bad but was underwhelmed by the plot and especially the choice of protagonists… Far too dull.

Hashut’s Blessing:

If anyone is okay with it can I borrow it and see if it lives up to my expectations, please?

Note: my expectations have always been that it was going to be utter crap, ever since the first released information AFTER the cast revelation.

zobo1942:

Use google and ‘borrow’ a copy.

stevedosdedos:

I thought the CGI was decent and the marines and their weapons looked the business, but unfortunately the plot was lacking. Its a shame as they could have done so much better.

richard barby:

i have seen a few teasers and the main tralers i would of liked of see if something like the first spacewolf book a central figure going from human to a space marine kind a cgi full metal jacket in space.

Like wise i pre ordered the movie i was very happy with it as a whole but the plot was weak , but for a first venture in to movies its a good starting point , the voice actors and perfect for the roles that they play , maybe it would have been better to spend more money on the story and less on name voices who is to say but if they do another one i know that i will be buying it, maybe a live action guard movie with orks or nids would work really well i know it would be very star ship troopers but who know could be really good

dncswlf:

I did not sit down and watch the entire thing, it was on in a game store I happened to be in… what I did like though, was the close up slow mo shots they would cut to every now and then… of a single spent shell flying through the air, or the bullet exploding out of the barrel and through someone’s face. Yes the plot was lacking… but if you took it for a shoot em up just blow stuff up movie it wasn’t too bad!

zobo1942:

Sucks that everything ‘animated’ means CGI now. The sad part is - if the CGI isn’t PERFECT, then it looks like crap.

Just my opinion, but I think it would have been better if they went for the 80s cartoon look.

cornixt:

That would have been very suitable, given the bright blue armour.

They can easily do CGI animation that looks like regular drawn animation, and it wouldn’t look even half as bad as the cheap 3D CGI does.
