Random question, but after spending about 10 minutes removing Dwarf Thunderer bucklers from sprues for a trade on this very site, I’m left wondering what they’re actually supposed to be used for besides making Chaos Dwarf blunderbusses.
For context, I bought two boxes of Thunderers to make my units and, bolstered with some BFSP Thunderers, I have 39 blunderbusses in total. Of those, six are command models so didn’t use up a buckler. That means I’ve used 33. I’m about to send off 40. So you therefore get at least 36 in each kit. Each kit, that is, of 14 models.
What possible use can 14 blokes have for 36 little shields? Can you even give your Dwarf missile troops shields? Why do you get so many? What do people do with these things when they’re not making blunderbusses?
They are a terrible shape (concave) for sticking to the models too. As I’ve said before, I’m convinced that they were put in there specifically to be used as blunderbuss ends, it’s the only thing that makes sense.
The reason you get so many? Notice how they have different motifs? Some want the same icon on all the models in the unit, and hey presto you get 4x number of models of bucklers. They used to/do this with regular shields as well. Plain shield for each model and 4 different icons for each shield. The regular Dwarf warrior box also comes with ungodly amounts of shields now that the boss is moulded on.
Why exactly they made them useless “bucklers” is totally beyond me, but shields were a very valid option for Thunderers in 6th & 7th.
What do people do with these things when they're not making blunderbusses?
They leave them on sprues or in bits boxes for years at a time until some top fellow like Nitro takes them off their hands and does something useful with them :) God knows I couldn't figure out any way of using them, but then again I'd already used zombie bells to make my BBs; and guess what? Those had been lying about in my bits box for years :)
Can you even give your Dwarf missile troops shields?
Yup, Quarrellers can also have great weapons, presumably as some form of compensation for their appalling shooting skills.
