Stupid question that’s probably been covered 4000 times, but are the war machines that Forgeworld is currently selling not detachable from the steam carriage? Does this mean we’re basically railroaded (no pun intended) into paying the 25 points even though we don’t want it?
That being said, is the extra height and cover from shooting and combat worth 25 points?
Thanks!

The same models are used w/o steamcarriage upgrade. Otherwise FW has said in their FAQ that the old models can be used instead. I’ve never heard about anyone having any problems w the FW models at tournaments, I dont know from personal experience though as I never participate in such events

Even better!!! Means we get the height advantage for free :D:D
Still I wonder is the hard cover and "counts as close combat behind a wall" are worth the points.
Thanks!

Generally not worth the points. In larger games (4000-ish) it could be worth it to put the doom mortar on a carriage, or at least one of the magma cannons. Being behind a wall is golden against some of the more mobile, shootier elf armies, and all of their close combat relies on the charge destroying the war machine (spears).
In a normal list, generally not worth it. Though if you really want to protect a specific war machine, and you somehow have the points to spare (how?), not too bad an upgrade to fill up points

I always thought paying the points was separate from the models, you are under no obligation to pay just because of how they look (unless you want to use the rules).
Admiral:
Moved to CD general discussion since the topic is as rules related as it is modelling related.
The FW models will require extensive conversion work to remove the steam carriage.

Those are my thoughts on the subject as well.
Steam Carriage is probably not worth it at all, though it shouldn’t stop anyone from making a themed train caravan list.
