[Archive] Painting/converting slave brands

Admiral:

Do you have a method or idea for how to achieve slave brands? There might be different ways to do this for Greenskins and Humans.

All input is welcome. :hat off

Grimstonefire:

Greenskins have warpaint normally? Are you asking whether they would be branded in the same way as humans/other slaves?

There is a rune in Tamurkhan called ‘worthless’ I believe. You could just paint that on each model in different places.

Bloodbeard:

I would paint on the rune from the book too.

Paint a thin line of dark red. Than an even thinner pinkish line on that. Use a red wash on top. And finally give the whole brand and other skin a fleshwash. So it doesn’t look “stamped on”.

Same for greenskins. Light green for branding.

Grimstonefire:

Alternatively, put a very thin layer of greenstuff on and scratch the rune with a bit of wire. Then just paint as a fresh wound.

Admiral:

Thank you very much for the advice!

Grimstonefire, the greenstuff idea is well worth a try. I’ve a human slave on the sculpting bench ready for that treatment.

As you remark, several of the Tamurkhan runes are indeed useful for slave brands. I’ve made use of some on a few trophies before, I think, and some more positive ones for decorations on an extensively converted great weapon unit (still WIP).

As for warpaint, I imagine that enslaved Greenskins would be denied warpaint as a form of humiliation. Though Hobgoblins could very well be allowed it as a form of privilege as the slave elite. They might not be much interested in it for cultural/taste reasons, though. I think brands, chains and neck irons are the way to go for enslaved Greenskins’ “decorations”.

Bloodbeard, that’s just the kind of painting advice I was looking for. I’ll try both your ideas out!

Dînadan:

Another idea for what to brand them with - how about coming up with clan symbols for the various clans that make up your army and working them into the slave brands to show ownership?

Dînadan
Are you spying on me? :o ;P

Every Chaos Dwarf in my army has a round plate with a clan marking, usually behind the back of his or her neck if the armour allows and if no hair is in the way. The clan symbols are simple things in order to not be too much of a pain in the backside to freehand paint.

I've been thinking about overlord or Sorcerer Prophet brand markings on some slaves, but now that you mentions it, it's obvious there should be clan brands as well.

Thanks for the idea!

Now I only have to figure out how to work the brands into the scrawny sculpted Gnoblars with their wrinkly noses. :~

Dînadan:

Well how about on the nose? Gnoblar ones are certainly big enough :stuck_out_tongue:

Admiral:

Gotta try it out!

This message was automatically appended because it was too short.

Admiral:

Grimstonefire, it worked well enough to use your technique (though with a sculpting tool not a pin) on a male human slave’s chest. I need to get some bigger slaves like Orcs, Ogres and humans to apply similar brands to. Gobbos and Gnoblars are hard to find surfaces on if their backs are whipped bloody.

I’ll try out a clan symbol somewhere else on him by scraping in a layer of green stuff, and then it’s off to the painted variant. Pictures up when I eventually (long wait) have a good camera.

Grimstonefire:

I would put a small blob of free stuff on then blend it with a wet finger. That way it should follow the contours of the muscles without obscuring anything and also blend smoothly at the sides.

Grimstonefire:

Can’t edit on a mobile it seems. :frowning: should read blob of greenstuff
