[Archive] Photobucket and Attachments

Admiral:

One thing which became clear as I sorted through the lost cases of members whose work had gone down the drain whether by the doings of Imageshack, Flickr or Photobucket, was that a number of members had only a few CDO attachments left to show for their work, and that was all that could be salvaged.

Sometimes these attached pictures showed up late or in the middle of the logs, but as a rule these attachments showed up early on in the very first posts.

Then helpful members pointed to Photobucket or some other photohosting site and the advantage of people not having to click through 20+ attachment thumbnails to view an army or conversion project. This has long been standard fare on forums, and most reasonably so. If one is going to the trouble of uploading pictures, why not do it in a way that favour the viewers? Especially since Photobucket for a stretch of years was a stable standard alternative for sharing pictures for hobbyists everywhere.

So, after those helpful comments, several logs went dark on the radar with no more images to share. This is not to say that all CDO attachments have survived through the years, on the contrary a heap were lost.

But it leaves some food for thought. We might e.g. want to upload attachments of our finished work along with pictures hosted elsewhere on, say, Imgur. Or at least leave attachments in the first log post for the sake of future salvage if and when some photohosting site turns unstable. I can’t say this is at all an appealing prospect to do for me personally since I’ve always found attachments clumsy (we use them for all modelling-art contests), but it does leave some insurance, some form of backup on the CDO site itself.
