I am a new person to this idea of using GS to make CD beards (i was looking for some thick guitar strings:mad no luck here) and i need a good effective yet simple method of doing it.
i have tried video tutorials but i find them not detailed enough, so if anyone could write something or show mw a website that has it written down i would be greatful
(there might be a couple of slaves for the best helper on this matter:D)
well, I don’t think that I can do better then xander did in his video tutorial, but I’ll ty:
roll out some greenstuff to form a pipe - in 2D it will look like this:
____________

fit the pipe to the place on your CD where you want the beard
let the greenstuff cure a little while - this is done to help keeping the pipe style during the next steps
take your modelling tool (the one with a sharp edge - you can use a x-acto knife if you want) and carefully make some lines into the pipe. Don’t press to hard since this would flatten your pipe!

you won’t be able to cover the whole perimeter of the pipe with just one step but only about 45° to 90°. If more then this is visible you need to repeat the process until your pipe’s perimeter is covered.
This is a very basic beard. If you are more advanced you can try to make the beard’s structure more like this:

I hope this helps and doesn’t get you more confused…
When I did my CD beards (and I did a LOT) I just started by making a beard-shaped blob on the area the beard was going to cover. Then I divided it into roughly equal long thin segments using a sculpting tool (kinda looked like tentacles at this stage). Then I went down each tentacle adding small notches/cuts on the left side, then the same on the right, then finally down the front. Adding the notches on the sides first helps to plump the strips up a little. When doing this, just push the edge of the tool into the green stuff gently, no sideways pulling or cutting motions or the strip can come away from the model. Make sure the tool is moist but not too wet (too dry and the green stuff will stick to the tool, too wet and water gets between the green stuff and the model and it comes away). When I’d done all the tentacle strips (about 5-6 per CD), I would insert the tool into the gaps between the coils to give them better definition. Job done.
I found it took a fair bit of practice to get the hang of it (some of the early ones are well ropey) but towards the end I was churning them out pretty fast.
Rather than using greenstuff, your idea of guitar strings got me thinking.
Now i dont have spare models or strings to hand at the minute but i would assume that E or A strings of heavy gauge electric guitar strings would suffice. If you were looking for insanely thick beards i think you could try electric bass strings, although they may look out of place.
I would be interested to see any end results, but if you choose not to do it i will gladly (With the help of TaskMaster Hashut’s Blessing giving me the occasional kick to remind me) attempt it

I will get on with this style of beard asap
and hope it will work well
a pic will be added soon
