[Archive] Pre-Big Hat Chaos Dwarf colours/themes

GRNDL:

Since I’ve been collecting some older CD models, I’ve been mulling over what colours to paint them. It seems that the Big Hat era brought in the idea of the CD’s being the fire dwarves, but before then they seem to be related to other themes: from the cold chaos wastes, or similar.

So, I was wondering what themes you guys think are appropriate for old Marauder and older models, helm eras?

Also, fluffwise, are they Hashut worshippers during this time, or follow the traditional ruinous powers?

Swissdictator:

For the old style: I can imagine them looking like they were once painted/decorated and have long since had the paint chipped or battered away… have tarnished/rusted, etc. They should look really Battle Worn. Almost like the equipment you’d expect from undead.

I could see desert themes, tundra themes, marsh themes, and hilly themes (not mountain).

I could see them following Hashut, but I could also see them going traditional ruinous powers as well. Khorne and Nurgle A LOT more so then Slaanesh or Tzeentch.

Tarrakk Blackhand:

I would think that these guys could be painted in black armour or possibly a grey. Dark brown also comes to mind.

I think they would follow Hashut, but probably have a different take on it. Maybe these are the CD’s that live in the flat lands by The Howling Wastes. They could be somewhat nomadic as their landscape is desolate. Also, they are somewhat removed from the large technological places of their Tall Hat brothers and probably don’t have the resources to make themselves things like Hellcannons, Earthshakers, etc.

Zanko:

I see them more nomadic or probably living in crude mountain fortresses …

In my sense they don´t have a special colour scheme or better to say uniform-style yet.

The society/religion is still at the beginning or better to say is not yet consolidated.

This is the reason that my 3rd edition army hasn´t a special colour scheme, everything is in progress … but the colours were/should rather be dark one. But without special preferences to a special colour.

I also think that the Big Hats also have no special defined colour, I rather think these are special colours of their home Ziggurat/Clan/Tribe and so there are diffenent colour schemes - you can see these ones here at the Showcase … :hat

It´s the same with the technology, they have some inventions like Tenderiser, Whirlwind and Juggernaut and canonlike machines like mortar and swivelgun but not the potential and resources like the latter CDs in their Ziggurats.

I also think that still in the beginning they had their own deity, not the “ordinary” ones like Khorne or Nurgle … in my understanding they are too much dwarf with their own demands and claims to a deity! :hat

I dont have my 3rd edition book to hand but will scan the images of cd from it later on and post them here.

Basically at the time of launch they where painted in a wide range of colours including blues, greesn and purples .

In fluff terms this is pre the 4 established Chaos Gods as we now know them

As were all chaos warbands back then - a really wild mixture of colours.

Kera foehunter:

i would stay with dull earth colors greys ,browns and blacks. There not peacocks just humble chaos dwarfs

armor red or black.

Pyro Stick:

As you can see they were just painted to fit in with the chaos colour schemes back then. I dont know how well they work really. I think the models look good with those crazy colours if they are on their own but they dont work that well as a unit. I think you should just paint them to fit in with your armies colour scheme, like i have done.

CheTralfara:

I really like how non-uniform and wildly varied the color schemes used to be… very pretty, however if you look at the above photo just for the colors, it makes me think empire… this is kinda what some empire armies look like (at least the ones i’ve seen) with their ragtag color schemes… I am glad that eavy metal outgrew this kinda of coloring though, because the effects of having a theme of colors on an army does wonders to unify the army!

Anyway, after reading my copies of the old Realms of Chaos books… which I believe contained the first chaos dwarf rules… I’m almost positive they were aligned to Khorne. This wasn’t mentioned in the fluff, but they were only an option for khorne warbands and khorne armies (full armies were rare in 3rd edition). This is only if I’m remembering correctly, but I’m pretty positive about this. I read it very recently (and specifically looked out for the CDs).

I so love the feeling of the older GW models and the painting…

Kera foehunter:

thanks pyro for the old school look back !! i like how we have better choice in paint and more colors now!!

Swissdictator
Can you explain these preferences? I agree on the tundra and hill themes - particularly cold wastes and the like, but why not mountains and why marsh?
I could see them following Hashut, but I could also see them going traditional ruinous powers as well. Khorne and Nurgle A LOT more so then Slaanesh or Tzeentch.

Swissdictator
Is the preference for Khorne and Nurgle simply because of how the CD's are presented - more fight than sorcery - at the time, or a personal preference in how you view the CD's?

Yeah, this is what I was thinking, but I wasn't set up a motley crew of random colours. I feel like I need some kind of unity/common theme for them and thats why I asked the question. Maybe after a few test models I'll feel better about it.
I think you should just paint them to fit in with your armies colour scheme, like i have done.

Pyro Stick
That might yet happen, although I started collecting these models to do something a bit different. I'm not sure if my colour scheme will work with the old armour styles - at least to my preference. I guess I'll have to see as I paint some tests.

Swissdictator:

GRNDL: A little of both.

In one of the old Chaos books it seems like Khorne could take CD as allies and Slaanesh couldn’t. I also saw Nurgle themed Helm CD, but I don’t seem to recall seeing Tzeentch ones.
