Steel oxide? I’ve done enough chemistry to know that it would be mostly made from iron oxide with a bit of carbon thrown in.

Off the top of my head I believe it's still iron oxide, because most steels are ferrous metals (meaning it has Iron in it). CRES (Corrosion resistant Steel) is different, though I can't remember exactly why off the top of my head, but it's corrosion is a grey powder (yes it still corrodes).

I was just being pedantic But just because an alloy or compound (briefly forgotten the term for a metal and non-metal compound) contains iron, does not mean it will form iron oxide.
