I think this was a pretty good deal, but I’d like to know what people think as I’ve now got buyer’s remorse. Not because of the army itself, but more the price tag as it’s not really something I can afford at the moment, and I’ll be paying it off until Xmas at least.
I picked up:
1 x Lord on Great Taurus
1 x Sorcerer on Lammasu
3 x Sorcerers (maybe convert one?)
2 x Hero w/Axe 1
1 x Hero w/Axe 2
13 x metal Axemen
72 x plastic Axemen
4 x Standard Bearer 2
4 x Drummers
4 x Leader w/ Sword 1
15 x Blunderbusses
1 x Hornblower
1 x Standard Bearer 1
1 x Leader w/ Sword 2
3 x Bull Centaur Standard Bearers (maybe convert one?)
7 x Bull Centaurs
1 x Blood Bowl Bull Centaur (for conversion)
1 x Earth Shaker Cannon /w 3 x crew
9 x Rocket Launchers, each w/ 2 x crew
I’m guessing this is close to 3500 pts, as a benchmark.
All of that was for just under $300 US (only a couple of the Axemen units are based and primed out of the lot, which is what I prefer).
So was this a decent deal at all?? Can anyone reassure me?!?
… and I suppose now I need some Hobbos or other green skins to round out the army x.x
I think thats a pretty good deal. Its got more than you need as well so maybe sell 2 Bull centaur standard bearers and a few rocket lauchers and get a bit of your money back. Dont covnert any of the original models. They are rare enough as it is without people cutting them up.
Yes, I missed them to a buddy of mine. Hoping he'll lend me some so that I can cast them (before anyone jumps on me, keep in mind this is for in-home private use, not for re-sale)

Casting a GW model, even for strictly personal use, is illegal just about everywhere. That's not to say you can't do it, but advertising it isn't good for the forums.
You can probably “convert” some of the rocket launchers to bolt throwers with a goblin/orc spear tip and and tube from a pen. No cutting the original model required, it fits in there nicely. I’ve done that with one of mine to make a temporary cannon.
I would say that’s a good deal too ; don’t convert them I would say ; maybe you can cut the prices by re-selling some of what you have in too much, like the death rockets (but you don’t have to ! keep your stuff ! ). You have sufficient heroes to do a very fun mix of every possibility too, so don’t convert the last sorceror, that way you can try the 4 sorcerors combinaison.

OK, you've all convinced me, I won't chop 'em up and convert them. I'm told one of the sorcerers was reposed and his banner poles replaced with brass rods, but I think that's all that was done to any of the models.
With regards to casting OOP models, I'd gladly pay cash for models if GW would start making them again. As it stands, they don't, so I can't. There's no revenue lost and nobody is making money off their IP either. However, you're still right, the letter of the law states that it is illegal. From a hobby stand point and in the spirit of the law there is a little bit of flexibility. I agree, we will all be safe if we think "don't recast anything". I can say this much however - I contacted GW 3-4 years ago about the legality of recasting some Warhammer Quest bits (also OOP) for private in-home use, explicitly stating that this was not for resale or use outside my home. The letter I got back a few months later was quite terse but said it was "OK". ... actually I think the letter ended with the exact words: "that's probably OK".
Anyway, glad to hear a few people chime in thinking that it sounds like an OK deal! Honestly, I don't know if I could re-sell any of them, even with 9 rockets and crew - I just think how tough it would be if I ever wanted to replace them or one was damaged or lost. Same thinking with my HeroQuest collection I think. I'm up to 15 copies of the core game, I don't know how many copies of Return of the Witchlord and Kellar's Keep I have, two copies of Wizards of Morcar and three copies each of the Barbarian and Elf Quest packs. I know I could easily sell my best copies of the BQP and EQP and make ~$150 each in a good auction, but I just can't bring myself to do it ;)
First, congrats with a nice bargin - even if it was quite an investment for you - you got them at a very fair price. Think I’ve paid about the same for something like half of it.
And then about conversion?? Their isn’t must varity in the Chaos Dwarf 5th ed. range - so if you want a more dynamic army and feel for it, go ahead converting them. Wanna protect you investment? then Box them and store them another 10-15 years. Think it all depends on “why did you buy these?” - and after all they are yours - so: ‘do what you like and what feels right’. I know for myself, that painting 72 identical plastic warriors would be killing for me.
So have a look through the forum - and you’ll find some pretty awesome big hat conversion, too:
And if you really wanted to you could always sell some of the palstic chaos dwarfs. 72 is too many anyways and you might be able to get a little cash back.
