[Archive] Putting the big hat back on

UktabiWildcat:

While i haven’t played fantasy in over 3 years and I haven’t played my chaos dwarfs since 5th ed, last weekend i broke out the big hats for a 2500 point tournament and put the fear of Hashut into everyone involved. After deciding i was going to attend i scoured this message board for information and Kdaai Destroyer conversion ideas, so i figured i would share my experience.

The tourney was 3 games at 2500 points with fortitude breakage for bonus battle points each game.

After reading every LoA unit discussion thread i could find on this board and playing two warm up games, this is what i took:

lvl 3 Prophet w/Hashut, talisman of protection, chalice of blood, Enchanted Shield.

Castellan BSB, Gr Wep, Mask of the Furnace, Luckstone

27 Infernal guard w/ Blunderbuss, Full command, banner of swiftness

27 Infernal guard w/ Blunderbuss, Full command

6 Bullcentaurs w/Shields, gr wep, standard, musician gleaming pennant

2 deathrockets

and a Kdaai Destroyer

Over the one pre tourney game and 3 games in the 22 man event, the list has lost a combined 325 points. I faced Nurgle daemons, a lizardman Slann bunker, a castling tomb kings list and vampire counts led by a blender lord. Both the lizardmen and the tomb kings wanted to hunker down and shoot/magic me to death, so i marched the blunderbuss units across the board and blasted them to pieces, in some sort of big hatted blitzkrieg. I wasn’t planning on an all out assault force but it worked, and worked well. The vampire counts and nurgle daemons were a little more aggressive but the mobility of the kdaai destroyer disrupted both armies plans, and even killed the vampire lord on turn 2.

I wasn’t going to run a destroyer but the destroyer idea threads on this board gave me a lot of inspiration to build on . I ended up converting a Maulerfiend into a bipedal curly bearded monstrosity of destruction, that im very happy with, wip pics should come soon.

Skink:

Welcome back to the CD flock my friend :hat off!!!

Seems like you had a decent success with your army, mind sharing some more detailed battle reports with pics (if any), and the lists of your opponent?

Also, how well did the double blunderbuss unit fare? 56 blunderbusses must be a mighty sight to behold:D.

Skink
The double blunderbuss units were a mighty sight. I deployed them 11 wide and far on one flank, with the banner of swiftness unit on the outside. I like to force the fight onto a diagonal axis and would turn the battlefield into a giant funnel. I was very aggressive with my blunderbuss as well. I would march forward if a simple move wouldn't let me shoot and ended every game at the mid-line or farther.

With the exception of the Nurgle daemon army i faced in my warm up game, none of my opponents were very aggressive.

As for what i faced and how i dealt with it.

The first tourney game was vs lizards. He had 4 units of skinks and a salamander team to harass and shot. Then two stegs and two big blocks of saurus to engage the enemy while the slaan in his temple guard buffed and regrew the combatants with life magic. Against him i placed the centaurs on the outside of my swift banner unit with the intention of getting around a wall section that was placed 2 inches in front of his deployment zone, while my Kdaai took the center. His entire force clustered in the center of his deployment zone with skinks in front of the saurus. I opened the game with hitting the salamanders with a death rocket, getting them to flee of the board, and putting 3 wounds on one of the stegs, while my force swung forward. He responded by sending one of his saurus units to meet the BC's and marched his stegs at my interior blunderbuss unit. On my turn i did not engage with the BC's but marched the BC's close and let the faster unit of blunderbuss shot the saurus. My other unit shot his unwounded steg, as it was within 12 while the wounded one was not, and put in 3 wounds. On his turn the one saurus unit charged the BC's while both stegs came at the interior blunderbuss unit. I rolled horrible and only did one wound to the charging stegs so I had to eat both impact hits! The warriors did kill the one wound steg in combat, then i made my stubborn ten Ld test then reformed to get more ranks. The BCs beat the saurus but steadfast and a slann means lizards dont run. On my next turn i crashed the Kdaii into the other saurus unit and proceeded to shoot the crap out of the temple guard. The game was basically locked like this until time was called. My IG fighting the steg would sneak in a few wounds then see them healed, I killed that damn stegs twice over, thanks to my prophets D3 wound wep and a few lucky 6's to wound, but it still had 1 wound left at the end!. The saurus fighting the BCs had one model left while, the temple guard had 2 models, when time was up. I got a minor victory but was on the precipice of a crushing win. I did lose the Kdaai after it took out the saurus due to massed poison shooting, but that would be my only losses of the whole tourney. Overall the blunderbuss only killed one steg, 7 saurus and 16 temple guard, but the army performed perfectly and only needed 10 more minutes to wipe the lizards from the table.

Ill write up the other two games soon.

Soulassassin:

That line of Blunderbusses (blunderbussi?) must have looked spectacular!

This got me excited to try and get my own unit painted. 10 wide :cheers
