[Archive] Shaved slaves?

Grimstonefire:

So I’m sculpting some dead human slaves this weekend for my Taurus base, and I’ve been thinking about the issue of beards/hair.

Logic seems to suggest they should all have shaggy beards and long hair.

Thoughts?

Note that I’m only talking ‘in character’ here and not looking for historical references.

GeofreyShank:

Yeah makes sense although I would think if they were killed as an example type death. The Chaos Dwarfs would probably shave them. That being the most humiliating thing in their culture.

If they were killed any other way I doubt they would bother after all it’s just a mere slave.

Dînadan:

Agreed with Geofrey - after all, would you really trust slaves with sharp blades? Bad enough they have shovels, picks and other tools, but you don’t want them to have something easily concealed.

That said, I think it’d also depend on what job the slave would be doing. A mining slave would have shaggy unkempt hair and beard, but a household slave (those working in the kitchens, waving fans, serving food, etc) would probably be clean shaven to avoid spreading lice and other parasites.

Also, dwarven slaves would always be clean shaven because they deserve that extra level of humiliation.

Grimstonefire:

I imagine being shaved by a hobgoblin/ other slave master isn’t going to be a pleasant experience at all. Would that be a type of punishment do you think?

Human beards are poxy and insignificant to a dwarf. Their whiskers don’t even count.

Depends on the work I guess, wouldn’t want to have a long beard/hair in a factory. Close to cogs or anything rotating. Im sure most slaves would “cut” their hair using a torch if nothing else available…
