[Archive] Skaven used for Hobgoblins?

Groznit Goregut:

Hi All,

TJUB had in his blog some fantastic Plague Monks used for some Sneaky Gits that looked amazing. He stated that he got the idea from someone else. Does anyone know who that was and where I can see more examples?

Has anyone tried using the regular Island of Blood Clan Rats for regular Hobgoblins? I’d really like to use a bunch, but I want something cheap that I can do. I don’t want to use Goblins at all. I know that some people had Flagellants, but I don’t want to go that route, either. I haven’t seen the IoB Skaven up close.

Thanks…

Murdock129:

The IoB skaven are gorgeous and rather cheap on eBay, they would be a great idea that I personally never thought of, though I’ve never seen the examples your talking about

Mantic Orcs, LOTR Orcs and Uruk-Hai and Mantic Ghouls are pretty good as other ideas if your looking

Grimbold Blackhammer:

All of my infantry Hobbos are Skaven Plague Monk bodies & arms.  They work fine though I am replacing the feet and heads.  You will run into one problem - the Plague Monk bodies are fat so you cannot model them decently with shields.  Or at least I couldn’t and have them rank up in any kind of decent manner.  Fortunately they look just fine with two hand weapons!

I’ll see if I can get some pictures posted of mine just so you have an idea of what they can look like.

vulcanologist:

Check my blog out. I use plague monks and goblin heads, legs and weapons. I’ve done a regiment of warriors and also one of sneaky gitz which I used the plague monk daggers for.

tjub:

Dont remember who it was… These here Hobgoblins are clanrats with grot heads.

Hashut’s Blessing:

I recall CheTrelfara doing it at some point, but my memory is hazy and so I could be completely wrong…

The IoB Skaven are probably more difficult to do it with because you’d have to remove their heads and I believe that the box set ones come with separate heads - could be wrong…

I can't claim to be the originator for the idea but I did write a how-to for Word of Hashut #10 on how to make Sneaky Gits from Plague monks.

I made a prototype in my prototyping thread.

TBQH it struck me as fairly... laborious.

No the box set comes with molded on heads. The only real difference is that shields are loose in the box set. It looks like a slightly less odious cut is needed but still.

Groznit Goregut:

Great response, guys! I appreciate it.

tjub, did you find it hard to make those hobgoblins out of the IoB set?

tjub:

They are from the clan box, but its easy. Simply remove the head and tail, a minimum of GS work is needed…

Baggronor:

It was me, and it was a damned long time ago:

Plague Monk with reversed daggers, Gnoblar head and GS hat.

Only made 5 in the end, as RH fell out of use straight after (they are unit-fillers now). Might well go back and make more when Tamurkhan is released

Groznit Goregut:

Very cool!  Thanks for sharing.

What do you think are the chances of using the much cheaper Island of Blood Skaven for bodies?  I know the Plague Monks are better, but also more expensive.  I’m trying to do things on the cheap.

Oh, also, do you think Gnoblar heads are better? Or Goblin heads? Maybe even old Night Goblin heads?

I think they would be trickier - you'd need to hack off the heads and remove a lot of fur and the tails. It comes down to whether the time and hassle is worth the difference in price - for me, I'd say no, but I don't know what your circumstances are.
It should be noted I was making Sneaky Gits though, so I really wanted the daggers and robes.
Oh, also, do you think Gnoblar heads are better? Or Goblin heads? Maybe even old Night Goblin heads?
I found the Gnoblar heads the best, the ears and noses are right for it. Goblin heads looked too big imo, as did the night goblin heads.

40k Ork Gretchin heads. For the following reasons.

Perfect size.
Better sculpts.
No need to muck about with greenstuff for them.

Groznit Goregut:

The problem with 40k Ork Gretchin heads is that I can’t find bitz people that sell them. I don’t want to buy a pack for every head for every hobgob.

Also, have people found a good archer model? Or good archer arms to use with Plague Priest?

tjub:

I bought 40+ on ebay at some bitstore before, Im sure they are still there somewhere…

Oh, bummer. I'd have thought they were available but it seems you're right.

As tjub says there should be bitz on eBay. Tried looking around but couldn't immediately find anything I must admit. I've so far relied mainly on "bitz stores". Tjub, where on eBay did you get yours? I'm not familiar with the eBay suppliers.

tjub:

I think it was from Hoard O Bits | eBay Stores but they dont seem to have any at the moment.

Groznit Goregut:

Yeah, I think everyone kept buying the heads and they found it hard to sell the bodies. Oh, well. I’ll have to use gobbo heads. Thanks, though…

Groznit Goregut:

I’ve been thinking about this…

The new liquid green stuff would be perfect for covering up skaven fur! Wait, maybe I shouldn’t tell anyone as there will now be a run on cheap Plague Monks!

Gretchin heads are impossible to find these days. I’ll have to use regular gobbo heads.

lostmember:

My Hobgoblins are all made from Island of Blood Skaven.

Very easy to work with, not a lot of converting needed. Just clip off the tail and use a hobby knife to scrape off the few bits of fur (there isn’t much). Then use a Gnoblar head for a head-swap and add a hat. I cut off the moulded-on shield and replace it with one I like better and add a hump and belly, but you don’t have to.

You can churn out a large unit in a day.
