[Archive] Smartphone 3d printer

Dînadan:

Just stumbled across this - turn your phone into a 3d printer:

Skink:

That’s awesome! Not even that expensive. Ah, if I only could use a 3D printing program…

One of the videos showed a guy taking a picture or video of something of a girl sitting down and was able to use that to print a sculpture of her head, so theoretically you could do that with a mini you own, but doing so would be highly illegal unless you have permission of whoever owns the rights to it, so really you could only use it for things you've sculpted yourself.

That said, could be useful for Admiral if he wants to ever try making a whole unit for sale - all he'd need to do is sculpt one, photo it, then print out a bunch of copies, tidy them up/tweak them with individual details and then send them off to the casters to produce a unit set for sale ;)

It’s just a 3D printer that has its own app, plus the gimmick of preventing you from using your phone while it prints.

The quality of 3D designs made by scanning an object with a regular phone are pretty poor. You should invest in buying some proper designs if you want a nice looking miniature printed.

Plus if there's a crack in the printing chamber you could end up with resin fused to the screen of your phone.

Jackswift:

It looks like the software doesn’t actually scan, it just runs the resin printer.  You need to have alternate scanning software or 3D design software to get your design.  The 32 micron resolution isn’t bad for on the fly printing, it is really not a bad option, and very cost effective.  Hmmm…
