I’m building my own dungeon tiles out of MDF and cork. Up until now I assumed I’d paint it by hand, but spray painting the main coat (dark grey probably) now seems so much more appealing. The time and effort I could have put in over xmas is all gone. What is recommended? Do I have a wider or narrower choice of sprays than would be used on regular miniatures? It’s not exactly shiney but should I rough-up the MDF first?
Thommy H:
I used citadel chaos black spray to undercoat mine. Looked a bit funny when it dried (it gets absorbed by the surface), but it seems to work fine. I did cover it in some pretty thick acrylic paint afterwards though!
Bloodbeard:
You should rough them up quickly with sandpapee or a file. Paint willbstick better and drybrushing works much better.
I suggest a spray from Armypainter. Comes in all colours andbhigh quality. Quick drybrush with other greys of cheap acrylic paint. Finish with very light grey or white.
Alternatively there are texture spray paint with stone textures. Works awesone. I’ve used that a lot. Just needs a wash in watered down black or dark brown afterwards.

I seal all of my bases that I make out of MDF before painting. That is only to prevent the material from separating and fraying if it ever gets wet, especially the edges. For that I use a 1:3 diluted mix of “Bond Crete”.
Any spray will still soak in abit but not as much. I’ve just used cheap spray undercoats when I felt it was needed then hand-painted over the top.

Thanks. I’ll see what they have in my local hobby stores, never even bothered looking at the sprays before. All the bits that are meant to look like realistic stone will be done by hand, I plan to do the full range of different floor coverings on the HeroQuest board.

Here is an early working version. The squares are all 30mm. I’m still experimenting with how to do the cork squares.
Bloodbeard:
Looks good. Adding some broken tiles here and there, blood splat on some and perhaps lichen on other - that’ll add a lot.
Plans for walls? Walls will be a part of my (in a far future) dungeon project.

I’ve been looking at the styrene sheet stone walls that you can get for model railways, but I might not do any walls at all, relying on contrasting floor tile colors to tell where the room edges are.
