I’ve always been interested in fantasy stuff and I also like the post apocaliptic world so I decided to make my own. It was kinda hard to make it but I think I have something. Here some fluff and what races/factions. Let me know what you guys think(this is not the final product).(Warning: I’m a bad writer)
In an age when the world of Therdon was slowly becoming a better world a war between two small kingdoms shook the entire world near its destruction. One the kingdoms had discovered a lost and ancient spell that they thought would help them win the war. Little did they know that this spell was lost for a reason. When they cast the spell they unleashed magic that would forever change the world and its inhabitants. It first sent forth chaotic blasts of magic that warped everything it touched. Then it forced molten rock to the surface burning all in its path. Then it opened portals in space in time dropping pieces of land from Therdon and other more alien worlds. The last thing it did was pull the three great continents of western Therdon together making massive title waves and bring land that was once under the sea to the surface. When all was done most of eastern Therdon was gone and there was a super continent when there were once three. Those who survived were met with a land completely changed filled with new dangers. Now war is on the rise once again as the survivors fight for control of the new continent.
Faction/Races
-Humans: Crusaders seeking to make the world as it was. Evil humans seeking to make a new evil regime.
-Nature spirits pist off with at every body for nearly destroying the world and wants to get ride of all its inhabitants.
Haven’t decided on that yet. I got the idea with the draenei(the utramarines blue Wow race). I’m still int he basic planning stages with most of this. Not sure i’ll even keep the idea.
Did you make/create the world for tabletop and/or role playing? Cause then you have to set different priorities!
… and when creating a new world Iwould choose not the normal races, perhaps one or two exceptions.
Nonetheless I like yhe idea with Cthulu and Mutants, not so normal! Human will fit in every world but “normal” Greenskins?! Perhaps in a way like in the RPG Earthdawn!
Have you some ideas concerning the geography and the wider histoical backround?
@furrie: Thx man. I hope to impress even more with my bad writting skills.
@Kera foehunter: Thx for the help. Might take you up on it soon.
@Hazkar: Thx, like I told furrie I hope to impress even though my writting sucks.
@Zanko: Well I did state that these factions/races were marching towards war so I guess tabletop or even strategy gamesin general.
I wanted Mutants becouse Fallout 3 kinda inspired me me on this so including them was a must. And as for Cthulhu I always felt he deserved to be in a fantasy thing so I just included him in mine. And waht the heck is Earthdawn?
And as far as geography goes kinda standard besides the sea floor no longer under the sea, alien looking pieces of land dotting here and their, and pieces of land that are at odd angles.
Dino, your ambitious is notable, but every fantasy world, if it is to endure, needs some kind of schtick - why are all these species in your world? How do they relate to each other. Tolkien’s word of Middle Earth, for example, is an extension of Norse Mythology and wears the motif proudly. Warhammer is an extension of medieval europe and an extrapolation of western history. You can’t just slap a bunch of races down and expect magic to happen. I don’t mean to imply that your idea and work is without merit, but if you’re serious about it, you need a schtick! What makes YOUR world different to everyone else’s.
Of course, my comments are with regards to a lasting world; perhaps even a professional route for you. If you are doing it for fun, then put your own mark on it and run with it and if someone says anything negative about your dream, ignore them and run with it.
Earthdawn is a RGG in which the Orks are a “normal” folk with all goods and bads - the only difference to the others were that the Orks were for lots of years a “slave folk”.
So the are fighting for their new freedom and they live their freedom …
@GRNDL: Thx for the wise words man, and I hear what your saying. But i’mtrying to make my own …thing. Like how Lovecraft developed his “Cosmic Horror” thing for his books i’m trying to develop a “Post Apacalyptice Fantasy” world. Does this make sense. Trying to be original with mine to put it simple.
@Zanko: I see. I’m not into RPG games like D&D and stuff like that so I didn’t know.
Anyway here is some fluff i’ve written for four of the factions/races. Now please be a little nice in youre critiques as i’m not much of a writer. So here we go.
Daughters of Floriana: In the deepest and oldest parts of the forests live the nature spirits. These beings range from sprites the size of sparrows to great tree creatures and even elementals of nature. Sometimes these places are visited by the women worshipers of the nature goddess Floriana. These worshipers are all women for Floriana only lets women worship her for she doesn?Tt like men. When the spell was cast that changed the world some spirits were severely hurt and nearly destroyed. These spirits combined with women who worship the nature goddess. These women became a plant women like being simply called Gaians. Other nature goddess followers have left the rest of humanity to join the forest spirits. Now these plant women, along the forest spirits, and the women worshipers seek to destroy all of the other races and make the world a place were nature rules alone.
Mutants: When the great spell was cast it released chaotic magical energies that changed some of the denizens of Theradon. These mutants as they are now called were stricken with massive mutations that ranged from tentacles to scaled hides. Some were mutated so much that they died during the mutation. Those that survived began to band together into tribes. The following years after the spell was cast their numbers began to grow quit quickly and soon these small tribes began to grow into towns and cities. Eventually they band together for and created their own society. These mutants began to hate the other races of Theradon and believed they should be the only race. Now the mutants march to war to destroy the other races of Theradon and rule the world.
Cthulhu(Not sure on a better name for this group ATM): Many eons ago the outer god known as Cthulhu was cursed to the bottom of the oceans forever by the elves after years of war with them and the other races of Theradon. His cities and followers were soon to follow their master to the bottom of the ocean as well. And so when the spell was cast the curse was broken and a few of his cities were raised from the ocean floor. However Cthulhu was severely hurt when the curse was lifted and unable to lead his armies. He called on the commanders his armies to come to him to receive his commands. He only gave them one command ?oReclaim this world for your master.? Now Cthulhu?Ts armies are on the move once again and with a will. Fishmen from the dark depths of the sea, monsters from another plan of existence, and evil things more ancient then elves are on the move to do their masters bidding.
Saurians: Long ago in the jungle lands of Kreltor the Saurions lived in a massive city deep in the jungle called Aldarun. There they made the now savage jungles a peaceful place for all of its inhabitants. One day they just vanished and a crater was all that was left were Aldarun once was. When the spell was cast the city reappeared were it was once before and its inhabitants unchanged and unaware of what happened. The spell had gone back in time and forcefully pulled Aldarun and its people to when the spell was at the peak of its power. Now the Saurions seek to bring peace to the world as they did all those thousands of years ago.
I can’t help but find it hilarious that every, single under 20 person who ever attempts to create a fantasy world always not only makes it a priority to include elves, but feels that there needs to be an adjective attached to the elves even if there are only one type of elves around.
So “Goblins” are enough to explain any myriad of size, shape, habitat, philosophy and appearance for goblins but the one group of Elves needs to be given the prefix “Phoenix” in order to be certain they are not mixed up with any other size, shape, habitate, philosphy or appearance of Elves (not that elves ever really have much of a range in those regards anyway).
“Mutants” seem kind of dull for a faction. Humans that have been modified in any imaginable way… doesn’t really make for much of a “race”, at least if their mutations were all accidental and haphazard like your description suggests. Chaos in WarHammer and your FallOut example can get away with it because the mutations all come from a single source and anyone can join the ‘mutant club’ if they are willing to sell their souls or join the group that becomes mutated. However, it would be difficult to imagine a group of vastly different people from all over just up and suddenly create their own society because they become sick. It is far more likely that they would be individually targetted and isolated much as though they’d been afflicted with a plague. There just wouldn’t be the kind of support or networking necessary for them to all get together and build their own village (and even if they did, it would be tiny would it not?)
Perhaps the Cthulhu race can simply be called “Merpeople” or “Creatures of the Deep”. Take the focus off the singular individual and make it more of a group dynamic.
I am curious as to what you have in mind for the Fantasy Aliens though. Across your entire list of races and factions so far they are the only one that doesn’t look a stereotypical photocopy. (Mind you, if Trolls are meant to be a society and faction in and of their own, perhaps you might have something interesting in mind for them. They usually don’t really get mentioned as a ‘race’ or ‘faction’ so much as a random monster.)
I always meant to finish writing my fantasy RPGs. Some of your ideas remind me of my medieval fantasy background, some are more akin to my high fantasy game.
I think the mutants should be very violent as a society. No doubt in the beginning they were all crazy and angry at being made outcasts, and this has permeated every level of their society. I imagine progress in anything would be pretty much dead for them.
Your aliens would be good if you had a tyranid style race. One that lives deep beneath the surface and swarms up every now and then to eat everything. For some reason they cannot dwell on the surface, so they are always kept back.
I think you should include evil dwarfs! But perhaps make them semi-nomadic, travelling round in massive steam tanks to get slaves and travel to mining camps.
well, I like the Phoenix elves… and surprise, the Daughters of Floriana
I think rather than having 2 fighting factions, the small countries that find the spell, it should be more of an underdog, or a city that has been enslaved or some such. In an attempt to give them the upper hand they find this and wreak havoc on the world. The catastrophe seems pretty intense though, and that may be what you’re going for, but at the same time, I mean, could anyone survive all that?
as GRNDL said, mimic it after something. like maybe the story of Pandora’s box? something like that. follow a theme already prevalent and well known. it’ll help to shape the story.
