[Archive] The First Commandment of Hashut

Dînadan:

"And Lo I sayeth unto you my Highest Commandment is ‘Children, Obey thy Father in All Things.’ And I decree that this shall hold true beyond the bonds of blood.

A family shall obey their head of the family, for he is their father and they his children.

A family head shall obey the head of his House whom I name Despot, for the despot is the father to their house and thus the family heads are his children.

A Despot shall obey the head of his Household whom I name Overlord, for the Overlord is the father of their Household and thus the Despots are his children.

An Overlord shall obey the Sorcerer of his Court whom I name Prophet, for the Prophet is father of the Court and thus the Overlord’s are his children.

A Prophet shall obey the High-Priest whom I name Regent, for the High-Priest is father to the Cult and thus the Prophets are his children.

The Regent Shall Obey me whom I name Hashut, for I Am his Father, and through him Father to All, and as it has been written, my Highest Commandment is ‘Children Obey thy Father in All Things.’

- inscription found on the first of the one hundred and forty-four bronze tablets in the Temple of Hashut atop Mingol Zharr-Naggrund, each displaying one of the one hundred and forty-four Commandments of Hashut given to the Twelve Fathers when they signed the Covenant of Hashut and pledged their allegiance to him. Smaller, stone versions of the tablets are found throughout the Dawi Zharr empire and can be found in almost any building. Many Dawi Zharr in positions of authority favour this one and display it prominently near their thrones.

Abecedar:

Another good work by one of our premier “Scribes of Hashut”

Dînadan:

Thanks Abecedar :hat off

And before you ask, no I don’t have an idea for the remaining 143 Commandments.  But could be a theme for the next 48 Scribe’s Contests :stuck_out_tongue:

Give it time, give it time. You'll eventually have to write all 143, and make a new subsection of the Wiki for them ;P

If I do, I'm think I might have to make the last few lame on purpose to make it look like in-universe, Hashut himself was struggling at that point and just going out of pure stubbornness of wanting to get to that number, lol

Admiral:

A Wiki subsection it will be, by whip or by willpower. Toil, scribe, toil! :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

The 12x12 commandments of Hashut project is admirable. And the results are striking so far! The First Commandment is a great start and sets the oppressive and grimdark tone for the rest. :cheers

Haha, and yes, the last commandments could do well with being marked by the stubborness of a bull to get to the end.

Dînadan:

Thanks Admiral, although I’ve probably set myself an impossible task by setting that number unless divine inspiration strikes, lol

Admiral:

I don’t think so. You’ve already nailed some core concepts like patriarchy, property, hierarchy and dominion. Branch out from there, and try to continue and keep the first dozen or so very much Chaos Dwarf core.

Then expand into more esoteric areas like blacksmith/Daemonsmithing commandments, sacrifice, relations with other gods, subjugation of Daemons, dealing out punishment, the duty for married men to breed many children upon their wives and concubines to keep the tribe strong (“bless with numbers”). Also, commandments regarding relations and domination of CDs’ uncorrupted kin, as well as a lot of craftsman and trade regulating commandments presenting taboos, laws and rituals accompanying various crafts (naturally, those present when the tablets were written one would presume). Plus specific ones for handling of chained fire Daemons (K’daai), captured enemy commanders, and lots of worship commandments regarding purity rites, idols, altars (fiery ones or molten metal). Also, something regarding speaking Hashut’s name and something about trade and alliance relations with worshippers of other Dark Gods. Something about how to treat conquered enemy idols. CD mystery cults, initiations into deeper mysteries. Veneration of bulls, spawns of Hashut (BCs, Tauri, Lammasus). Veneration of fire, lightning etc. Something about warfare, darkness, fire, ash, slag, metals, ore… The list goes on. 144 don’t seem like an impossible number at all. It’ll just take time.

My plan is/was to try and theme them into blocks of 12. So for example, the first twelve have the theme of dominion. The next twelve will have another theme, the one after that another and so on. Difficulty is going to be in deciding what the themes will be and what can fit in to those themes

Admiral:

That’s even more clever. Good plan with the structure, it’ll help you come up with stuff for sure.
