[Archive] The Golden Edition(s) of Warhammer Fantasy Miniatures

Thommy H:

Entry edition(s): Late 5th Edition for WHFB, late 2nd Edition for 40K.

Favourite edition(s) all round (including background, price and White Dwarf stuff): The current editions of both games are the best to date.

Golden edition(s) of WHFB miniatures: Now. The plastic kits available now are completely beyond the imagination of my 14-year-old self. I remember thinking that the metal dragons of 4th/5th Edition were huge models. If you just look at the battle scenes from White Dwarfs back then, it’s almost comical to see the tiny Hive Tyrants with their weird paintjobs compared to what we have now. I even remember in 4th Edition 40K when the plastic Carnifex was considered a huge and terrifying monster - if only we’d known what would follow!

That said, for metal figures (which is obviously a moot point with the current range…), I have a soft spot for the metals from around the time I started 40K, particularly Jes Goodwin’s Space Marine Scouts and Sisters of Battle. I’m also a huge fan of the Perrys’ Bretonnian range from 5th Edition, but mostly because they’re more “historical” than what came afterwards. But apart from a few particular sculpts, I have no desire to revisit the models that GW was producing when I was younger.

Meant to press eighth, and managed to hit the button for the miniatures that don’t exist. Because I’m a boss.

Sticklander:

Entry: Current purely for miniatures

Favourite: 6th, as I grew up with it, and was given the rulebook as a young’n, and it mesmerised me! Plus, it was before the descent into major corporate asshattery.

Golden: Much the same as Thommy expressed, the current plastic kits are absolutely fantastic, but it is unfortunate that I consider current edition to be the golden era for miniatures, as every other aspect of the hobby is far from golden. I fear that if I was growing up now, I wouldn’t even be able to get into the hobby due to the prices!
