§16: Introduction

As of 04-14-2014: This is now a CDO project.

“It is a guttural language, and Khazalid vowel sounds in particular are uncompromisingly precise and very heavily accented. Consonants are often spat aggressively or gargled at the back of the throat.”

"Greetings fellow Dawi-Zharr"

I know I’ve had some fun and flavor greeting fellow users here like this.

Approaching the subject, we should be aware of the Lore on various dialects of Khazalid and that things can be described in many different ways. However I hope we could contribute an article presenting some examples of how we say things here around the trendier district of Mingol Zharr-Naggrund. Direct translation are impossible because of the differences in the amount of words between the ancient dwarf tongue and the low speech of the race of the Umgi that they themselves call “In-Glesh”. This task is a great one however it truly is amazing to see a word or a phrase develop and something I think is much better suited as a community project than a scholarly one.

Submissions can be good or bad however nothing is really wrong if it’s descriptive and everyone is welcome to participate with submissions, new or additional entries, grammatical corrections for words or interesting phrases, curses or battlecries etc.

§17: The origin of the Chaos Dwarf language and comments by Rick Priestley

"The original source for the Dwarf language was the Dwarf Army book for WH 4th edition as I’m sure you know - which Nigel Stillman and I wrote way back when - the Dwarfish language and grammar was based on an article I wrote in the 1980’s for Warhammer Roleplay that never saw the light of day. The Chaos Dwarf language is a dialect of your standard Dwarf Khazalid - so in terms of grammar and word construction it is the same. The trouble is - many subsequent writers at GW have either ignored or weren’t aware of the work done previously - as so often happens. The words I introduced for Tamurkhan were all based on the original Khazalid - I guess when the book was rewri

example makes no sense to me in terms of its word form (as a Dwarf word). Good luck with the project - may your beards grow ever longer!“

§18: General guidelines:

We work with versions to keep track of what has been done where.

v1.0 equals a translated dictionary entry.

v1.5 is a simplified and contracted entry with corrected Khazalid and dwarfified DToC.

v2.0 means the entry has revised grammar and has been double-checked by Hashut’s Blessing.

Like the famous example of “Chaos Dwarfs” translating into “Dawi-Zharr” that literally makes “Dwarfs of Fire”, we will have to resort to wit, cunning and clever wordplay for most translations.

The lore of various Khazalid dialects mean that there is no problem with multiple variations of the same word or phrase. Dialects and languages change with time and trend.

My initial comment is: don’t try to get exact translations or entire translations a it makes things cumbersome.

E.g. Daemonsmith Sorcerer - Grungn-A-Dhaos’y Khaosul (Literally: Smith-Of-Daemonmetal Sorcerer) ; Khazalid + Dark Tongue of Chaos

When we could have, for example, Grungn-a-dhaos’y (literal: Smith of Daemonmetal, translation: Daemonmetalsmith, equivalent: Daemonsmith Sorcerer/Daemonsmith).

Just as an example of removing redundancies: we may find a contracted name for it still.

Hashut’s Blessing
Possible linguistic influences on the language (or those languages the Chaos Dwarfs may have influenced themselves) are the Dark Tongue (Chaos tribesmen and Warriors of Chaos), Goblin Tongue (Greenskins), particularly Harghazhakh, the Hobgoblin dialect; Grumbarth (Ogre Kingdoms), and Daemonic (the arcane language of demons and Chaos sorcerers)"

Khazalid is only the base language of the Chaos Dwarf tongue, I suggest however primarily use of loan-words from languages that are relevant to what they are describing, like for instance:

-Daemonic units or Daemon related terms, like: K’daai, Sorcerers, Daemonsmiths, Lore of Hashut, Magic Items, Possessed Warmachines, etc = Khazalid grammar and base + Daemon Tongue

-Hobgoblin units or hobgoblin related terms, like Hobgoblin Khan, Murder boss etc. = Khazalid grammar and base + Harghazhakh / Hobgoblin dialect

-Ogre units or ogre related terms, like slave-ogre etc. = Khazalid grammar and base + Grumbarth (The Tongue of the Ogre Kingdoms)
Regarding the use of apostrophes and hyphens, it may be a case by case basis, but hyphens are preferable to apostrophes because of the Khazalid roots. A lot of the formation of the language may be down to what “feels” right, but we can certainly base a rough system on it.

Hashut’s Blessing
Submissions can be left in replies here in this thread and I will update the lists accordingly  Try to keep to the format of the example below for easier overview and editing, also please include both stem and grammar for the sake of discussion.

Example:

Chaos Siege Giant

Baragak Gront-Zharr (Literally: Siege machine-ing Giant of Fire: Giant of Fire that does sieges)

Stem:

Barag - Cannon, siege-machine, war machine (Khazalid)

Gronti - Giants (as in creatures) (Khazalid)

Zharr - Fire (Khazalid)

Khazalid Grammar:

Generalizing: + i, makes Singular of Gronti: Gront

The concept of: + ak, makes the concept of a siege-machine: Baragak
