[Archive] The Red Queen's Wardens: Update - Artisans XXIV Golem

Jackswift:

A bit of progress on the berzerker unit. Fully assembled and based. A few conversions throughout.

Finally decided the second stage form of the caterpillar men. Bigger, meaner, and nastier with lots of battle damage repaired by mechanical limbs. I’ll give everyone a chance to guess before I list the bits from which Frankenzerker was built.

Abecedar:

I love your creativity and the creature you are making and I have no idea of the Bitz

Pappa Midnight:

I’m loving the second stage conversions! They look mean as hell!!!

Look forward to seeing some paint on these bad boys!

Jackswift:

Thanks very much gentlemen!

I have been going through my collection with the intent of capping my collection at a specific points value and divesting my self of the additional models.

To that end I have been crafting an army list for KoW which contains all possible units that I might field once my army is completed (which is still several years out I suspect; at least 3 more even if I continue to complete the same amount each year as I did last year)

The below list amounts to around ±4K pts and is a good stopping point though there may be some stragglers.  I most instances, I am unlikely to play more than a 3K game:

I may also add in some goblin/orc/or ogre allies in the future to account for machines such as the Skullcracker that do not feature on the Abyssal Dwarf lists.

My KoW List has evolved as follows.

Each Regiment allows 1 Hero OR 1 Monster OR 1 Warmachine
Each Horde (essentially a larger unit) allows 1 Hero AND 1 Monster AND 1 Warmachine

This army list currently contains the following:
Abyssal Dwarfs
3 Heroes
7 Regiments (allows 7 units either Hero, Monster, or Warmachine)
2 Hordes (allows 2 more heroes, 2 more Monsters, and 2 more warmachines
3 Troops (2 per regiment or 4 per horde)
3 War Engines
2 Monsters

Allied Forces of Nature
4 Hordes
4 Monsters

Timothy Archer:

this is a really amazing conversion . this creature is gonna be crazy once painted . i really like Rackham minis and what you are doing with them ! bravo

Jackswift:

It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to post.  The last hobby related project I have worked on in any form was the Airship model.  When it became apparent that I had grossly under estimated the time I needed to get anywhere close to finished, I decided to bow out of the contest.  Since that time, I have not had any spare hobby time for the better part of two months.

I am now posting WIP Airship photos from before the end of the contest with the hope that I will be inspired to get this monstrosity done.  I took the photos below a few days before end of contest and am only just getting around to posting them.  The current model is just a slight bit beyond what you see here.

I was looking for something a bit non-traditional, but still mostly in CD theme.  I settled upon the form of a nautilus for the gas bag.  The nautilus in fiction is suitably mysterious, mis-understood, and often associated with the lovecraftian smog of things twisted, warped, and not natural.  Fittingly chaos dwarf… if a bit off message.  Add in the steampunk factor and we have a winner.

The gas bag form proved to be an interesting and somewhat tedious challenge.  The core is 1.5mm styrene with a support mechanism of sprue bits.  I started with wood struts, but quickly decided that I needed the added bonding strength of styrene glue for these.  Next to the bag you can see work started on a figurehead to be attached to the front of the gas bag.  I got a little further before work stopped (the result of which will be shown in a future post).  The figure head is made completely of lego bionicle bits and came out quite well.

The core of the airship is kitbashed using a 1/72 Pegasus nautilus model chopped up in all sorts of interesting ways and combined with styrene decking and bionicle bits for girders and struts.  Tentacles laying about the model are a combination of segmented lego arms and the tentacles left over from the maulerfiend model.  More to follow in a few days once additional headway is made.

The engine bit curving up towards the back is still very WIP and theoretically will have flickering lighting and a captive kdaii inside (like I said… I bit off way too much).
Now that I am turning back to this I can take the time needed to really make this thing the way I envision it.  Cheers, and let me know your thoughts.

bas_2312:

Wow that’s very interesting looking!

I really hope you finish this model

Carcearion:

Really amazing looking start! I?Tm not sure if we are just looking at the skeleton right now, but I feel like I can already see how well it will fit into your unique army aesthetic.

Can?Tt wait to see how it all looks when you finally get her finished! :hat off

Admiral:

Ingenious start. Reeks Black Kraken, which can only be for the good. Who cares about contest deadlines? This thing deserves to be polished thoroughly no matter how long it takes! It’s a winner already, medal or no winner.

Abecedar:

Yay. The Bigger the Better. Glad you are going to finish it. I still haven’t finished mine to my satisfaction.

tjub:

Wow, that looks great so far. Will be very interesting to see how it turns out! And I like the use of old confrontation models as well.

Ghrask Dragh:

Yes confrontation were great for the darker style minis as is that monstrosity!

Wow I really can’t wait to see what you next with that it looks fantastic already

Jackswift:

Below re shots and detail re my Steam Enhanced Animated Lava Wyrm Golem entry for Artisans XXIV.  The concept was that an enterprising sorcerer found the corpse shell of a Lava Wyrm and used the nearly impermeable hyde to build and animate a destructive burrowing golem. Able to capture its prey in writhing manipulators and spit glowing Magma from its mechanical jaws the creation made for a fearsome warmachine if slightly difficult to control while submerged. CD foes are fortunate that such experiments seldom last long due to the complex valves and mechanisms needed to vent and manage pressure from under the earth.

As usual I forgot to take WIP shots.  The model is based off of the massive Reaper Goremaw the Devourer model.  The thing is one solid chunk of bones plastic + the head, base, and jaw bits. Here is a shot from the internet with a 28mm model for comparison:

The teeth/capture arms come from a Skullcracker model and were chopped up to provide joints and lever arms for the mechanism tha works them.  The mechanical tentacles are maulerfiend bits (that model just keeps on giving) with lego tentacle arm hinge extensions.

The maw cannon and steam mechanism parts on the back are mostly from a forgeworld death korps mortar with added mechanism bits.  You saw other parts of the same model on the dragon cannon I built a few years back.

Finally the armor bits are chopped and distressed styrene card.

Was all in all a fun build with what is becoming the usual speed paint job. Plan to add runes to the armor to indicate magical protection against heat and magma. I’ll also redden the base portion of the wyrm more to represent the lava heat glow better.

Cheers, JR

Will Liam:

Yep awesome through and through - this was my favourite Golem in the competition - after seeing how you converted it and having a comparison to the huge size of the thing I now love it even more - a true image of the power of Chaos Dwarfs - Pure Excellence

Uther the unhinged:

What a great mini. Fantastic idea beautifully realized. Ver very impressive

Abecedar:

I loved what you had and even more so now that I can see how it started

Carcearion:

Wow! An amazing conversion! Love this miniature!

Hmm… there is always that subtle wonderland theme worked into your stuff. I feel it here but I can’t quite put my finger on it.

Jackswift:

Jackswift:

Another fun conversion.  I started with two very interesting ideas but only had time to complete one.  Hopefully the other which I now have parts for will show up in a future contest.  As usual, I really didn’t get any will photos aside from a pic of the pieces strewn on my cutting board.  I need to put a “Take a photo NOW!” sign on my work desk that I see every time I look up…

The core model is a 1/12 resin bust of this guy that I found someone letting go of on Ebay.

The musculature was bulked up enough to look right in CD proportions, and the weapon was about right as well:

The beard is actually tail pieces from 3 different Reaper Bones Bathalian miniatures (Bones are some of my favorite places to get pieces for kitbash).  Like this guy here:

I chopped and fit them at various angles to the jaw and filled in to the sideburns with smaller bits chopped off.  The tusks also came from the same model.

The hat is made up from Bathalian tentacles, bits from the Forgeworld Winged Taurus and the front of the hat is leftover bits from the spine of a vinyl bubblegum crisis armor kitbash I did several years ago (to make an eldar Titan).  It was the shape I needed.  Top of the hat is a washer a bit of plastic tube and the flame from the back of Drazoath’s (sp?) Saddle.

The base pieces are cork board slabs for the stone with smaller pieces going up to cover the waist, and lower back to give the torso a shorter, more dwarfish profile, and shaped to make it look like the figure is walking in a granite robe.  More pieces of cork are fitted up the back and on the shoulder to make it look carved from a stone outcrop of pedestal.

The piece can be used as terrain or it may find use in a K’daai Destroyer or KoW Greater Earth Elemental capacity.  Let me know your thoughts.  Cheers!

tjub:

I actually thought it was something 3D printed!:stuck_out_tongue: Great conversion, would work well as either suggestions in game.
