[Archive] The Red Queen's Wardens: Update - Artisans XXIV Golem

Murkwood:

Great model, the verdigris is done very well.

Scar:

Cool conversion m8!

Jackswift:

Thanks very much for the comments and votes gentlemen.  Was a very strong contest and was a pleasure to take part in it.

Perhaps the tail end could have been replaced with something less 40k-ish…

Admiral
Yeah.  I was kinda hoping no one would notice.  Frankly I didn’t have an idea on my mind in time to do something different.  Still don’t.  The current is passable, but I may well chop it off and replace it in the future.
…as a  adorer or Demonic War-Engines (the Warhammer 40k Defiler is what got me into table top war gaming) this was really up my alley.

Carcearion
Awesome!  The mix of the mechanical and the non mechanical has always been a fascinating subject matter for me.  Have plans for more including Blood-Crushers and some other interesting items, no doubt more bio-mechanical chaotic monstrosities will be forthcoming in future contests.
I really love the concept, your choice of parts and the finished model.

Papa Midnight
Thanks.  I really tried to use many of the model parts in a different way.  Legs turned around, should armor as hooves and the rider’s throne, hair from the arcane emissary as flames, the fiend’s body upside down and the legs mounted as for a bull.  I think the result… tail notwithstanding… was a success.
Especially the wings are awesome!

Zanko
Thanks.  That Reaper Bones Steampunk Dragon is a wonderful model source for conversion parts.  They came out well with a few tweaks and trims from the original bits.

Thanks, I have hit upon a formula of two colors which watered down and applied as a water heavy wash work beautifully.  I like the result in a majority of cases, unfortunately the paint colors come from the previous GW line, and the one before that (so I am constantly scraping dry paint and adding water to make the mix).  Finding a close color set may be fun by the time I run out.  If you are interested, I can look-up the names.

And now for something completely different:

This is very late in posting, but life got complicated right around the close of the contest, so please forgive the delay.

This is my Artisans XX contest entry the “Chaos Dwarf Greater Behemoth”

The original idea was to take the juggernaught concept and make it into something brutish, massive, and befitting of the “juggernaught” title.  The original model, while fitting with the edition models and style has always seemed a bit small and certainly less imposing on the battlefield than it has potential to be.

I started with several concepts that would be unrecognizeable compared to the below.  First sketches were boxish moving fortresses with giant wheels and chaos dwarf head armored prows (cant imagine where I got that idea), pulled by multiple teams of bloodcrushers, and pushed by a slave giant (what?.. I was thinking small).  These sketches were fine but missing oomph and pzzazz needed to really catch the eye (and little more than light lines in a general shape on paper).   Out of a whim, I started drawing bull shapes thinking to use the upper torso and head… on giant wheels.  Then the legs happened mostly for fun… and well, I really liked the result.

The rest as they say (“They” undoubtedly being some back temple room filled with sinister Chaos Dwarf Sorcerers playing Zawi Baccarat and smoking fine Lustrian cigars), is history.  Add some detail from the original model including dual cannon, and column mounted levels.  Add a fine smattering of Assyrian motif details from internet searches (sorry, not as well thought out at the idea boards as Admiral), and one chaos dwarf just about to be kicked mightily onto the next continent… for scale.  Finally a slightly inappropriate, but strategically effective cannon, and some easily misconstrued text about buttresses,… and the below came into being:

Cheers and all that!  Jackswift

Abecedar:

When are you building it?

Jackswift:

Not really on the agenda yet. Either sometime in 2021, or when we have a 6 month Golden Hat with “Build your own Walking Fortress” as the theme… Whichever comes first.

Abecedar:

Will it be remote controlled?

Pappa Midnight:

a 6 month Golden Hat with "Build your own Walking Fortress" as the theme..

Jackswift
That would be one hell of a competition!!!

Pappa Midnight
Next year's Golden Hat theme: Quit your job and make a Juggernaut.

Jackswift:

Will it be remote controlled?

Abecedar
Nope. Manually controlled with real working steam boilers, live cannon, and tiny AI controlled (the big hats can accomodate processor chips) chaos dwarf soldiers inside to operate it autonomously on the tabletop... What else could it be?... I can see the chaos on the tabletop now... Bwa... Bwa-ha.... Bwa Ha Ha HA HAAAaaa...

Jackswift:

A quick update re the Berzerker unit I started for the previous GH comp bit was not able to finish.  I finished the core 5 models earlier this week aside from some freehand detail on the red cloak.  I have also started on the remainder of the unit which you can see lined up behind the first rank.

More WIP on those next week.   Will likely be 45% unit filler with something near the min model count for KoW.  Looking at what I have thus far I need to devote more time to units versus monsters and warmachines so that I can actually field everything I have put together so far.  Have several built or built and primed but I tend to find that the inital base coats on tons of unit models put me in a state of tedious delirium that I have to struggle to push through.  It’s the final detail layers that I really enjoy.

Anyway.  Let me know your thoughts:

Cheers, JR

Abecedar:

Lovely work yet again. They do look properly beserkerish

Malorndk:

Cool weapons as well! I really love the centipede body paint job on the the models still. Really different but cool concept

Fuggit Khan:

Those weapons look spectacular, they actually look razor sharp and that you should be careful picking them up, lest you cut your finger open.

I understand the principle and steps to paint weapon edges like that, but I have never been to pull it off convincingly. You’ve really mastered that painting effect…Very nicely done!

:hat off

Darkmeer:

I really like these. They are properly chaotic and would be terrifying on the battlefield.

Slavemaster Hod:

Nice job. I’m a huge Confrontation collector, so I love seeing the models painted to a high standard. You’ve done quite well making the Mid-Nor feel very CD.

Pappa Midnight:

Yet more cute little caterpillars… I really do love these nasty little brutes!
For unit fillers have you thought of doing some eggs ( for reference some butterfly eggs look a little like the “pods” in Aliens) or possibly a chrysalis so it looks like one is ready to transform into a  “Champion”.

Admiral:

They sure stand out, with a touch of brilliance. Great paintjob, not least to the blades and underbellies! Mad to boot.

Jackswift:

Thanks very much for the comments gentlemen.  Glad these guys are so well received.

Unfortunately my image hosting site had some major issues and I have been forced to relocate, and manually relink a majority of my images.  As a result, my posts will have some broken links for the next few days to a week or two while I plod through and fix all of the links.  Some of the replies may still have broken links, but such is the way things go.

Some very good ideas.  Not sure if I will end up using them.  Already have a direction that I am heading in… which hopefully you will see soonish.

Me as well, my Mid Nor collection was much neglected until I really started getting my CD army going.  There will hopefully be so much more to follow, and some Tir Na Bor models as well.

JohnnyDrama:

Hi mate,

Came to check out your army blog as well. Love your painting style and general army feel!

Cheers,

JD
