Tarrakk Blackhand:
Just wondered if you think that it would be possible that Chaos Dwarfs would use Trench Warfare like they used in WWI to hold back enemies from invading Zarrh Naggrund?
It wouldn’t be with Machine Guns, but would incorporate elaborate trenches that used Hobgoblin Bolt Throwers and CD Blunderbusses in the front lines, Hobgoblin Archers and CD Warriors in the secondary lines and the Earth Shakers, Rocket Launchers and Other in the back rows.
What are your thoughts?
wallacer:
Perfectly likely in theory, although in practice Zharr Naggrund itself is probably so much a fortress that trenches wouldn’t really be necessary.
Swissdictator:
I think Wallacer has a good point.
I could see it for some outposts though.
Plus modern trench Warfare came from the American Civil War when they started realizing Napoleonic tactics were… suicidal. So Blunderbusses, Archers, and Bolt Throwers or Rockets defending I could easily see. Earth shakers too as they look A LOT like ACW Siege Guns.

Sorry, just a history student being geeky.
Ironically we discussed trench warfare today… so maybe I’m just geeking out.
TwilightCo:
I concur, however…
Zharr Naggrund has been described as industrial wasteland and with dwarfs being as they are, it would not be unexpected to find floodgates and spillways designed to direct the city’s chemical waste directly down the primary thoroughfares. It would be an effective and relatively inexpensive line of defense.

I think you've lead me to Earthshaker paradise Swiss...
I may very well make my Earthshakers rail guns.
Border Reiver:
Make your earthshakers look like the Karl SP mortar. They’ll look much more steam punkish.
That and there are a couple of manufacturers (Dragon and Trumpeter) that make models that can be converted.
Loki:
Now this is a true earth shaker :o
Kera foehunter:
that probably take 7 pounds of black power to shot the canon ball swiss
Groznit Goregut:
I wouldn’t think that there would be much trench warfare. Trench warfare came about when the accuracy of muskets made massed units a bad idea. Massed units are still considered a good thing, so I don’t think it would change that much.
Just to be extra geeky, it was the Minie’ ball and a rifled barrel (which spun the bullet) that gave it greater accuracy and distance.
Tarrakk Blackhand:
ThanX for the input guys! I just thought that instead of every army meeting on some grassy “britonian” looking fireld, wouldn’t it be kool if the CD’s were hiding in a trench with Blunderbusses aimed so that no opposing army could get into Zarrh Nagrund.
Skitter:
Well, I do believe there should be trench warfare in warhammer, but only in siege. Take a look at the Spanish-Dutch wars and see how those sieges were conducted. Trenches zig-zagging towards the bastions of the besieged city. Dig under the bastions, and blow them up. This kind of warfare fits Empire, Dwarfs and Chaos Dwarfs well, as we have gunpowder. Forgeworld have a couple of siege bases for empire artillery I believe.
Skaven would also fit to a certain extent, but they would most likely come from below enmasse and just blow everything up that way.
Grats on post number 1000 Tarrakk
Swissdictator:
I think Skaven would do the WWII Soviet technique “If we throw enough rats they can’t kill us all” and they do have the numbers to do it. Which for a fictional species of evil rat men… is quite fun!
Look up the battle of the crater in the American Civil War for an example of digging under and trying to blow it up that went… bad.
As skitter said congrats on post 1,000 Blackhands :cheers
Tarrakk Blackhand:
ThanX guys! Oops! That makes 1001!
Interesting idea about the Skaven Swiss. I was thinking of the enemy army engaging the skaven and having them fall back into the next cluster, and then that cluster falling back until the final clusters of Skaven were so strong that the exhausted enemy would be overrun with Skaven! Same thing happened in Russia with the Germans.

Wow… 1000 posts in 6 months… that’s an average 5-6 posts per day, with no sundays or holidays!
Took me quite a bit more to get there in two years! LOL
I can’t imagine chaos dwarfs in trench warfare, it’s not aggressive enough. They probably simply throw hordes of greenskins at their enemies to soften them up a bit before the heavy armoured CD units go out to meet them.
Border Reiver:
Nothing like having your enemy break on your defences then moving out to enslave the surviors though.
snowblizz:
Well Trench Warfare isn’t exactly a strategy or tactic you use…
It is what happens when you are besieging fortresses or trying to use outdated tactics against superior firepower.
Also, you don’t dig defensive trenches if you have a fortress. Then you already have other defences (walls, ramparts, etc), trenches are mainly used by the attacker.
So in conclusion, no I do no think they’d use trench warfare in the way you suggest.
Kera foehunter:
yea skaven would be a foe in this battle with the globadiers and the ratler guns.
Yea but that make it hard to use the dreaded hamster wheel
