[Archive] Trick lists- Hobgoblin horde, Iron Daemon spam, etc?

RiTides:

I am curious if anyone could share some trick lists / outside of the box lists. Specifically, in reading through the Legion of Azgorh, two jump out at me that I haven’t seen much online:

-Hobgoblins in giant units. If my math is right, a bus of 75 of these can fit in a deployment zone. That might be too much, but a bus of 60 could pin something in place to get hit in the flank by a scarier unit (Destroyer, Hellcannon, Iron Daemon, Bull Centaurs, K’daii, etc)

-Iron Daemon spam. Why do I only ever see one of these in lists? Hellbound at T8, W8 and likely to get off the charge. I would envision these in a list with very little shooting. Similar idea to above, the Iron Daemons pin things in place and generally act unkillable (although with not doing much killing themselves unless they are upgraded to Skullcrackers). They also provide some shooting themselves. Has anyone ever tried running 3 at 2.5K - 3K???

Thanks and feel free to share any other unique / trick lists that you have  or to point me towards a depository of such or ones posted in other threads.

Da Crusha:

I tried fishing for some lists like this before but not many people feel they are effective. most agree the typical list is best. a while ago I came up with a spam HG list. consisted mostly of HGs and big war machines  with deamonsmiths for accuracy. It was ok but I felt Ravening hordes did it better. I began running a similar one lately.

Grimbold Blackhammer:

I’m actually playing with two Iron Daemons right now but my opponents are giving me dirty looks when I do. On the table the support each other brilliantly - on pins the enemy in place while the other comes and smashes it in the side. Or both fire at the Demon Prince to keep it away. Or my hobbos charge to provide ranks and my Iron Daemons provide the kills. Two is ridiculously better than one! But they are so hard to get points out of, opponents don’t enjoy those games. And I’m still playing softer lists to try and encourage a general positive acceptance of the book in my area. I’ll definitely provide more feedback as it comes in though. So far, two rock the house!

adolrak:

I ran 60 gobs in a tournament recently and won. They were by far the MVP of my list. I didnt use any iron daemons, but I found HW/SH with lore of metal giving them a 3+ armor save made them impossible for opponents to deal with. In a game against ogres I had them in horde and i didnt even think they’d get quad charged. Iron blaster, maneaters and bulls in the front, with a mini star in the flank. They held up for 3 rounds of combat before i could get everything into position for multiple rear/flank counter charges, and one of those rounds was a very successful magic phase for my opponent ugh. Go hobgobs.

RiTides:

Grimbold and adolrak, can you link to the lists you’re referring to, or copy/paste them here? Thanks

NoisyAssassin:

I used a single Iron Daemon in the last game I played, and I definitely plan on taking two next time.

I wonder if Death would be a good lore to run with for the chance of Doom and Darkness actually allowing the IDs to break Steadfast units if they roll decently with Thunderstomps/Impact hits?

Fuggit Khan:

Personally I love the Hobgoblins, and use them in blocks of 50 (5 wide and 10 ranks deep). Obviously with such a long unit flank of 10 models you got to protect their side from getting charged, but some strategic moving of some HG Wolf Raiders acting as fast cavalry ‘shields’ can usually thwart your opponent. And as much as I love my Hobgoblins, I use them as any Chaos Dwarf would: meat for the grinder. Let a block of 50 HG tie up your opponents best unit, bog them down and then throw your K’Daii Destroyer and/or Iron Daemon in to (hopefully) maul his other units, or charge the flank of the enemy unit bogged down with your HG block. Keeping your general and BSB bearer close by will usually guarantee that your HG block of 50 greenskins will hold in most situations.

Grimbold Blackhammer:

My current 2,400 point list…

Sorcerer-Prophet (General) - Level 4 of Hashut carrying the Dispel Scroll, Talisman of Preservation, Charmed Shield, & Blood of Hashut

Dark Castellan (Battle Standard Bearer) - wielding a Great Weapon and wearing the Mask of the Furnace & Ironcurse Icon

Daemonsmith Sorcerer - Level 1 of Metal carrying the Chalice of Blood and Darkness

24 Infernal Guard armed with Blunderbusses w/ Full Command and bearing the Standard of Swiftness

20 Hobgoblins armed with Bows & Shields w/ a Standard Bearer & Musician

2 Iron Daemons (Hellbound)

1 Deathshrieker Rocket

1 Magma Cannon

1 Hellcannon

Technically I have two lists - one for “tier 1” armies (Lizardmen, Ogre Kingdoms, Skaven, & Warriors of Chaos), and one for all the rest. This is my non-tier 1 list.

is where you can find my list with the 60 hob gobbos list.

RiTides:

Fuggit, Grimbold, and adolrak, thanks for the thoughts on the big hobgoblin units :). I have found a model that I think I can get a lot of cheaply enough to enable me to do this.

NoisyAssassin, post when you try out the 2 Iron Daemons! I am getting my first one this week, and hopefully adding 2 more next month… although I doubt I’ll use more than 2 unless in a 3000 point 'Ard Boyz type event trying to play points denial.
