[Archive] Unique Siberian and Alaskan laminar armour

Admiral:

Happening to stumble across this, I thought it too peculiar not to spread on and share. Could in Warhammer possibly be used for strange Marauders from way up north, with the usual Chaos treatment.

Behold, the laminar armour (Wikipedia link) worn by warriors of some Siberian and Alaskan tribes, fashioned from leather, bone and wooden planks. The wing-like arm pieces remain a unique solution not seen elsewhere in the world:

Since no metal is involved, it makes one wonder if humans crafted protective gear from leather, bone and wood long before bronzecasting was mastered.

I'm pretty sure I wouldn't try to replicate it on miniatures. I don't think it would look right.
The wing pieces probably also sheltered the wearers from wind and snow maybe?
Definitely. People would have made armour from whatever they had. I've seen pictures of bone helmets somewhere before

Probably the famous boarstusk helmet? I wanna sat Greek, minoan? Which should be contemporary with bronzeworking even. So it's not like metal just bang overtook everything else.

Also wood was used in shields almost to the "end". And various non metallic armours were common everywhere, especially in warmer climates. Eg in Southamerica where they knew metalworking and made some metal weapons they used cloth armour.

Admiral:

Yes, and linen armour was introduced and used by Greek Hoplites and other contemporary warriors long after iron had won ground.

My guess is also that the wing planks could serve as protection against wind and snow, and naturally to cover your head and arms from arrows when retreating from the enemy.

The boar tusk helmet featured on one of the Hobgoblin head sculpts (too big, will be sculpted in smaller variants later on):
