[Archive] Using Traffic to CDO's Advantage - (Formerly Subsidizing the Costs of CDO)

AGPO:

How about a mutual link initiative? A volenteer (or volenteers) contacts the other major forums they know and offers to post a link to them on our site if they will reciprocate. That way new members here get exposed to other cool forums/companies, and we get exposure in return

Canix:

Not sure about the advertising but it doesnt seem to harm other sites as long as it isnt dating/webcam rubbish ala coolminiornot. If you have a disable feature it would be pretty useless for those advertising .

I would be willing to pay £5 a year but it would reduce members if the payment was compulsory!

Revenue generating ideas are good but that would be a fulll time job so not really applicable

To sum up i think it would be better to have discreet advertising and maybe a fee for members who want to support the site financially:hat

We could get a whip symbol to show we were slavers of the site lol

torn:

i agree with canix i wouldnt support an involuntary membership scheme, and nobody is going to pay for removable ads.

basically if your looking to take advantage of a large number of hits there are only 2 things you can do with that. use the site to advertise something of your own, or let other people pay to advertise on the site.

AGPO:

I think quite a few would pay, but it’d reduce the advertising revenue

cornixt:

So it all evens out! Get money from ad revenue, or from people who pay not to see the ads

wallacer:

Advertising is fine so long as it is fairly discrete and appropriate to the site.

The problem with running a store is that the time you need to invest in the site would increase (unless you are going to get someone else to look after the store side of things).

Personally, I would think organising a banner advertisement is probably a lot less hassle than running a store.

Kera foehunter:

heck i wouldn’t fell bad giving money to the best site on the web.

or we can donate some stuff on the site …we can use pay pal and that can be the site account.

Doogle:

As was previously stated, I would say go for the paypal donation scheme. I know a lot of the core people are probably willing to donate atleast 5$ American to the site, and that would just be a minimum.

If that does nto work out, then you could probably fall back on advertisement through GF9 and etc. I know I would probably donate a good 10-20$ easily, as I love this site, and I frequent it quite often these days.

Willmark:

I think the point is (if I read Xander correctly) is what to do (if anything) with the massive traffic that a very young site is generating.

Xander:

I almost feel it necessary to close this topic as people see to be greatly confusing its intent.

1) I will never institute a mandatory membership fee. Never.

2) I will never institute a “pay money to avoid advertisements” system. Never.

With those two out of the way let me go on to say, I am not asking at this point for donations. I appreciate all the kind words about donating, but I am really not trying to hit any of you up for money. I have a full time job, 135 bucks a year is not a cancer of the wallet.

I accept some of the responsibility for the misunderstanding as the thread name is misleading, I will adjust it. I also said we could talk about any ideas you had, which is true. But the way people are reading this seems to imply that I am suggesting that I really need money from you guys, or that I would impose money systems on you like some kind of tax.

So let me try to refocus this topic like I did on the previous page. We have a large number of page views being generated by the site. This much traffic ought to be utilized to benefit us. Discuss, as Willmark has suggested, ways we could work this to our advantage.

Willmark:

As I proposed in another thread perhaps a “web ring” of sorts for CD sites

in other languages? Just a thought.

Ishkur Cinderhat:

I always felt that webrings don’t really work. I also consider them a relic of what the internet was like 10 years ago, but correct me if I’m wrong with that. ^^ I use to link to this forum in the other forum where I moderate, and I was very happy to see it show up in the web statistic Xander put up some time ago.

Is there maybe a way to further increase the way in which we are linked to the other Chaos sites (i.e. Chamber of the Everchosen, and others)?

Grish:

If you’re looking for a not for profit deal, perhaps you could do an exchange of services.

Put up selective non-intrusive advertisements for like sites. Stores that create miniatures, other WH sites, etc. You could do a per site exchange, such as getting free merchandise to give away on this forum in contests, links from other sites to your site, etc.

Not a web ring per say (hence the "") ;) more of a "alliance" of like minded sites for the common goal of CD's, just in different languages.

Knight Of Awsome:

2) I will never institute a "pay money to avoid advertisements" system. Never.

Xander
What we could do is you have to be signed in in order to not see the pop up adds...becouse we do have a lot of "incoming" ip address's, right?

The paypal donation by chose is a good idea, because of "younger" people on the site (like me, but i think I'm the only one) would have a very hard time on convincing there parents to pay $5-20 for this site...

Willmark:

Please reread this thread, paying is not what this thread is about.

grom:

well… firstly i wanted to write down: OBJECTION!

but… well… u are our master Xander, so any decisions in this matter u and only u should took… and as still as it only takes your time to make fun its good…

btw. I ALWAYS WILL SAY BIG OBJECTION TO ANY “GOLD MEMBERSHIP” PROPOSITIONS…

Thommy H:

I have no problem with ads. Warseer has that little, unobtrusive banner at the top, don’t they? That doesn’t bother me in the slightest and, if there were more obtrusive banners, I can just block them using firefox plugins anyway. Might as well generate some revenue and cut down that $135.

Willmark:

Again, everyone please re-read this thread and Xander’s last comments; this is not about site revenue to defray hosting costs. This simply to brainstorm ideas of what we should do (if anything) with the immense amount of traffic we are generating… and how to put it to best use/our advantage.

Hashut’s Blessing:

I still dislike the idea of Mr. Xander paying on his own. If I had the income, I’d chip in. If there were a donation section thing, I’d put in a little via that, hopefully others would too. Any extra could perhaps pay for adverts to here… Google ads, I guess I’m okay with, but only if we need the ads…
