I have been off the grid for a while in a post end times/ AOS rut but am again pretty excited by the 9th age and even more by 8.5 esp since it has a slight return of the much beloved ravening hordes two pager.
Has anyone had much experience with 8.5? I would be keen to hear your thoughts.
Never heard about . I play 8th edition, but if I didn’t I would play 7th, 6th, 9th age or maybe try out 5th ed. or KoW.
The WFB player base has already been shattered across 8th ed., 9th age, AoS and KoW (Primarily) so I do not believe another fan made project like 8,5th ed. will help the community much. It might still be a good game, and I would never disrespect anyone from enjoying it.
I only hear praise about 9th age so I would put my love in that direction if you had to chose between the two. Things might be different i Australia however. If your locals are all about 8,5th ed., then by all means go hard on that. The system with most local players are probably the right choice for you

I absolutely agree with Malorn. As fitting house rules may be is a solid player base much more important. From all projects which started after the End Times T9A is by far the most professional and rests on so many shoulders that support in the future is rather reliable. After trying out two or three community projects and KoW my choice finally fell on T9A. In southern Germany where I live the player base has regrown since last year, mainly because some people who had stopped playing years before came back. Really "new" players are still rare, though.
I remember 8.5 popping up at the same time as the 9th age project - but it didn’t get the same momemtum. The stuff looks good however. But I’e heard of nobody in Denmark playing it (and not seen it mentioned on Powerfist.dk). We’ve had nationals in KoW, we have a large amount of 9th Age and a tournament scene for it - and some AoS i GW store Copenhagen.
Flipped through the Chaos Dwarf book and even though it’s not a big thing I did see:
Fuggit Khans - Fuggit Khan model twice
Tjubs - a lot of tjubs stuff
TheHoodedMan - I think it’s your lava bases, so you have a Taur’ruk in the book.
Have you been asked? Couldn’t see any credit for the pictures, no ‘painted by’. Makes me wonder where all the fluff text is from. … I don’t like it when stuff gets borrowed without due reference.
Never heard about it before either. I wish them luck, though. In Sweden, 9th Age holds sway when it comes to mass ranked fantasy wargames, with AoS going strong in a couple of hobby centres as well.
I could imagine that 8.5 or Warhammer 9th Edition, done by Eliasson, will fit a viable little niche in the future if the 9th Age for good and ill continues to pull away from the last official Warhammer edition. This is because whatever good comes out of such reinventions, a distancing from 8th edition will open up a need for a new polished and reasonably balanced community 8th edition among some players, a bit like 3rd edition has seen a renaissance in recent years.
Just for the record: Warhammer 8.5, 9th Age or whatever community project are free to use, remix and nick any of my background, illustration and miniature picture stuff without asking first. A mention in credits and heads-up that they do would be appreciated if it would happen, but it isn’t necessary.
I looked at the Warhammer 8.5 project back during its inception but I am one of those who chose to focus my efforts on the 9th Age project. I actually started out volunteering my time as the Chaos Dwarf community support guy and, though my roles have changed, I’m still a huge proponent of the efforts of the group. I encourage you (or anyone else!) to check out our webpage and, if you have the time and the motivation, volunteer. We still have several teams that are short-staffed :cheers And if you have any questions, please let me know; I’ll do my best to answer them for you.

They're using my pics of Fuggit? I would prefer if they had asked first...I would of agreed to let them use it, but the decent thing is to always ask first.
A mention of credit would be proper too.

Fuggit Khan
Same here! but there were Xanders, Ishkur Cinderhats among other older stuff from CDO.
Made a quick overview over the chaos dwarfs book yesterday. It is a nice fan product. Indeed one of my pics was used in the file as well as a lot of familiar looking pictures, some from CDO (icluding Fuggit Khan), some I think from commercial products like the old armybook and I think a Russian Alternative box picture. Very courageous ;).
On one side it is nice to see that other people obiously like the pics, on the other side it is definitely a must to ask for permission and giving credit, even in a fan book. I like people dedicating themselves to such a huge amount of work and putting all these books together, but at the moment you put these online for public this is the latest time to get sure that you use only permitted photographs or texts.
Certainly I dont fight fan projects. But if asked I probably wouldnt have agreed to a usage of my pics because from that moment it is out of my control. I am an active supporter of T9A and don`t like the fantasy rank and file community split up further.
Maybe I contact them some time and ask them to exchange that pic. Thank you, Bloodbeard, for the hint.
My wife is a photographer so is pretty well versed in Copyright law. It is well within your rights to request any of your images taken down immediately. And should they refuse, you can then sue them for buckets of $$$.
They actually have some GW photos in there, so they are going to have to edit it at some point to remove those at least.
While I admire the determination and work put in, I think the community is far more behind 9th Age at this stage, and it’s about time for people to start backing only a few of the horses left in the race and cut the rest. 9th Age has at least made an effort to stop using copyrighted terms and pictures, which keeps them legally in the clear, and Kings of War has the suitable (and so much more affordable*) models.
*Went to a store the other day that sold a mix of older GW models (only a few years old) and newer ones. The older ones had the older prices on them, $20-30 mostly, while the newer ones were at the new prices of $35-50. Incredible how much the prices jumped.
Thank you :cheers
I enjoyed reading it last night. It's actually a pretty well made and thought out book (honestly I think it's better written than the Tamurkhan book)...they 'borrowed' quite a bit of pics and fluff from other sources, but all in all they did a nice job of putting it all together, and it was nice to see such an eclectic mix of GW, Mantic and CDO pics of troops and machines all together in one reference.
Still, a proper mention of credit to the sources they 'borrowed' from would of been nice :hat
Since I started this thread I thought I would make contact with the Facebook group behind this project and raised the issue of using the images and got this response:
Cheers, pics of the minis in the most part were gained from Google Images searches. If people have issues regarding their use, they can contact me and I can change the photos used. Conversely, if people have better pics, they can let me know and I can put it into the books instead.
So as I thought the use of images was for good intentions but if anyone has any concerns they seem to be happy to change them or as some of you have suggested (which I think is great for the CDO) acknowledge the source of pics. Anyway if you do a Facebook search for Warhammer fantasy 8.5 community you will find the group and you can contact them and I am sure they will make arrangements to delete, change, alter etc.
Cheers
