My friend asked about warhammer forge monsters disappearing, and was told what you posted above. They are reducing the range based on what sells, but are keeping the casts. In the middle of next year there will be rereleases and new releases. My impression is that FW had to hold off on fantasy while GW put the end times into motion. I then asked about books, would there be any new ones with the new models specifically, and got told they had the battle for black fire pass book 'back' whatever that means (back in design studio?) and that there could be more in the future. I wanted to ask about the K'daai Destroyer and chaos dwarf list in particular but I didn't get to ask another question. All other questions were 40k and heresy in the afternoon seminar. I wasn't in the morning one (same presentation just different questions asked).

Vogon:

Well I’m now here and have seminar tickets so I will ask about the destroyer.

Cheers

Vogon.

Grollbringer:

would you also ask how and whether they will continue in the 9. edi the chaos dwarfs please?

Not least keeping the army list and rules updated for 9th edition! New miniatures is very nice, but on the face of it we've already got lots from Forgeworld and don't really need a fully-fledged army range that soon. Rules that makes us available for tournaments and pick-up games are more of a priority.

Parish:

Like every year, I’m looking forward to reading your report vogon  !

Hope you’ll bring some good news !

Vogon:

OK So here we go with the report then.

Unfortunately my place of work has changed its internet protocols and photobucket is now blocked so I will upload my pictures when I get home.

Headlines.

There will be more Warhammer Forge but not until towards the end of 2015 after the End Times Campaign settles down and they know who?Ts been killed off. The K?TDaai Destroyer is still on hold but I was told by both Tony Cottrell and Neil Cook it will get released at some point. No other Chaos Dwarfs are planned.

Horus Heresy Rules all!

The detail.

So the venue has changed (again) and first impressions of the new one were favourable. Parking was free which was nice considering both NIA and NEC you had to pay. The event was split on to three levels but thankfully after last year none were in the basement down three flights of stairs :).

I picked up my program and tickets for the afternoon Black Library and Forge World seminars and then sat down and had a coffee while waiting for the event to start (I got there at about 8:45 for a 9:30 start).

I had a good old browse of the program and this is where my first inkling of one of the more telling of changes from ?oGames Day? to ?oWarhammer Fest?. There was almost no mention of ?oGames Workshop? The program was mostly split into three sections 1 Golden Daemon, 2 Forge World and 3 Black Library with a map on the back cover. There didn?Tt even seem to be much of a GW Studio presence on the map.

When the doors opened I headed straight to the sales area to sort out my Forge World wants and pick up a couple of books and other odds and sods that you can?Tt get in a high street store and here?Ts where I hit the first snag. I was one of the first couple of dozen through the door so was really near the front of the queue however now being a 2 day event there were a number of items that had sold out on the previous day most notably the ?oWarhammer Fest? T-shirts only had XL and XXL sizes left.

The Sales area format was similar to last year with a segregated Forge World Queue and Stand, and a central area with Black Library and everything else and one set of tills. Possibly because I was in there much closer to the front than ever before but I though t is was much better organised this year and there was not the crush of previous years though that could have changed later on as more people came in. Anyway I?Td made the purchases I came for and was leaving the sales area I was stopped by a guy and asked if I wanted a ticket for the first Black Library session starting in 5 minutes. So along I toddled.

The first session was a Q&A with Nick Kyme and Guy Hayley (Authors) & Neil Roberts (Artist). This was really interesting, the Authors were pretty frank and talked about the process and their involvement, how much freedom they have and so on. There was not much asked about upcoming works other than there?Ts a lot of Horus Heresy coming up for the foreseeable future. There were a couple of questions about will there be any books on what the Emperor is doing to which the answer was not really up until the end and the Siege of Terra. The Horus Heresy is largely about the Primarchs and the ?oAbsence? of the Emperor.

They did mention the Ulanor Campaign but said that while it?Ts always a possibility to write about it (see the Wolf of Ash and Fire short story) there are no plans to do anything and there is an ?oembarrassment of riches? for this and the Great Crusade which may get written one day but not any time soon and certainly not before the Horus Heresy project had been completed.

One thing that Neil said that particularly jumped out at me was that almost no artwork is done using traditional methods any more. Particularly for him as a freelance everything gets submitted as a .jpg anyway so it makes sense to do it straight into the computer in photoshop but any artwork must be digitised at some point anyway so it can be used for books, magazines etc.

Now was time for a good wander round. Starting from the top floor the golden daemon cabinets were probably the emptiest I?Tve seen them in a very long time. The entries that were there were of a pretty high standard but there were very few examples of entries used as a ?oget in early? ticket. There was a fairly large number of Chaos Dwarfs which was nice to see I?Tll post some pictures later on.

Also on the top floor was the Forge World studio area. As always there were the massive display tables with tons of painted miniatures in a battle scene. The new one looked like it was a representation of a Calth battle (Word Bearers and Ultra Marines) The studio area its self was mostly Devoted to the Horus Heresy, I saw one cabinet tucked into a corner with WFB stuff in it and there was nothing new to report at all. There were a couple of new Contemptor Dreads on show (Alpha Legion and Imperial Fists) that I saw but nothing much else. No sign of a new Primarch model at the moment.

Most of the floor however was devoted to the so called ?oPods? which were basically a desk, with a camera, a big TV and a bunch of chairs. The idea seemed to be mini-seminars which were half an hour apiece where a sculptor, painter, author or artist would sit down at the desk and paint something or convert something or just talk and answer questions going through the process all the while you could see what was happening in detail on the telly. At least half a dozen of these things were going on at any one time all through the day. Unfortunately I didn?Tt really get much chance to experience any of them properly but the bits I did see were extremely good. If I?Td have planned better I would have done a couple of these as there were some that sounded really useful but with the seminars, meeting up with friends and getting some lunch as well as having a general wander around I just didn?Tt get the time.

The next flight down had the seminar room and the GW studio section. Most of this was devoted to the Nagash End Times, including a comparison of the Undead through the history of GW including an example of the original Nagash model and the original and newest versions of the screaming skull catapult. There were also a number of art prints on sale including some of the character pictures from the Forge World HH books on canvas. Very nice looking but I?Td never get one past the missus

The ground floor was basically the Sales area on one side of the main thoroughfare and then the Black Library area on the other. This was also full of ?oPods? with Authors and Artists giving talks and demonstrations. There was also a set of paint stations in the middle of the room with headphones giving instruction on how to paint. I didn?Tt have a go myself but every time I went past every seat was filled so it was pretty popular.

The Sales area also had (shock, horror) some gaming areas for people who had brought armies to have games. Nothing as grand as the club gaming areas they used to have in the NEC but they were at least there. There was also a set piece game taking place that you could take part in, the Humbling of Setra, scenario recently feaured in the White Dwarf Magazine. There seemed to be a pretty big crowd around it when I went past late afternoon.

Again comparing to last year the catering was far better this year. The venue actually had on site catering and it was decent and not outrageously priced.

After a bite to eat it was time for Black Library seminar 2. This was in a different format and started with Gav Thorpe, XXX and James Swallow reading excerpts from upcoming books followed by a Q&A. 2 of the three readings were HH and one (Sons of Wrath) was set immediately post HH and was about the founding of the Flesh Tearers Chapter.

As Gav was one of the Authors in the hot seat when the Q&A came around I asked about Grudgebearer and The Chaos Dwarfs. He said that at the time he was the Loremaster of WFB at GW and wanted to push for Chaos Dwarfs to come back both in background and as a playable army but as far as he knows there are no more plans for anything Chaos Dwarf related other than what is currently available from Forge World.

This was the only non-Horus Heresy question. Probably the best question of the session was ?oIf you could, would you change the outcome of the Heresy?? There was a quite intense discussion about how to make the end still a surprise without changing the outcome and alternate results like was done in Fear to Tread. An interesting insight into the creative process.

After that finished I stayed sat in my seat for the Forge World Seminar and got ready with the camera. They started the presentation with a statement that if you?Tre here for anything other than 40K or Horus Heresy then you?Tre going to be disappointed. They blitzed through the slides (photos to follow) and the only 40K thing is the Imperial Armour Volume Thirteen - War Machines of the Lost and the Damned. If it?Ts Chaos and Forge World has made it it?Ts in the book. There are some updated lost and the damned lists including Slaanesh and Tzeentch variant lists but no new models at the moment.

The rest of the presentation was focused on the Horus Heresy The next book is called Conquest and will be a standalone book and not part of a set like the Istvaan campaign books. It will feature Sons Of Horus, Death Guard, Solar Auxilia, Mechanicum and Dark Mechanicum and Knights. If anyone wants I?Tll post more detailed information on setting and such like a bit later on. Probably when I get home and post some photos.

There will be a Horus Heresy Master Class book showing how they built some of the display pieces and then the next book after that will be called Tempest and is the War on Calth featuring Ultramarines, Word Bearers and associated support.

Upcoming models for these will be 2 new Legion Flyers including a ?orather big one?, a new legion dreadnaught class which is bigger than a Contemptor, a Solar Auxilia Storm Hammer superheavy and Ogryns in sealed armour like the Solar Auxilia.

The next Primarch being worked on is Curze and there is also one of his lieutenants but I?Tm not up on the Night Lords enough to remember his name. I?Tll post a picture later but I?Tm pretty sure it?Ts not Sigismund as claimed by Tony Cottrel ;).

The Q&A was all about the Heresy. I can?Tt remember a single question about anything else. I didn?Tt get to ask a question myself during the main Q&A but did ask Tony about WFB and the K?TDaai afterwards and was told that the K?TDaai will get done eventually and there will be more Warhammer Forge stuff once the End Times Campaign has settled down. The focus is though on the Horus Heresy.

After Calth he thought it would be Signus Prime then Prospero.

When asked how many HH books they?Tre planning they said they didn?Tt know but probably at least 20 and when asked about time scales the answer was ?ohopefully before we die? though he did say at least 10 to 15 years but they may not do them all in order.

He asked for a show of hands for each of the remaining primarchs which currently have rules in print and it seems that the most people in the room wanted Alpharius, followed by Corax, Perturabo and then the fewest hands went up for Dorn.

They talked about introducing new daemons and some named daemon princes for Calth and Signus.

After the seminar ended I decided to head home as I had a bit of a drive ahead of me.

Overall I thought it was a vast improvement on last year?Ts debacle but really should have been called Horus Heresy fest. There were much fewer people there and the place was busy without being so busy you couldn?Tt get round. I understand that there were tickets on sale on the door so as they had limited it to 2500 per day that sounds to me like there has been a lot of disenchantment with the events.

It was also a much more mature audience, I think I could count the number of kids I saw without running out of fingers.

I know I?Tll be going back next year but next time I plan to attend some of those pod things

That?Ts all for now but I?Tll post more when I get home including a selection of the photos I took.

Cheers

Bitterman:

Great review. After seeing Games Day get worse and worse I was more than happy to give Warhammer Fest a miss, but it sounds like there was some cool stuff going on… as long as you like the Horus Heresy.

Vogon:

OK Picture time

First off Chaos Dwarf Golden Daemon Entries

None of these are mine as I’ve just moved house and didn’t have time to prepare anything this year.

Ye gods, those Golden Demon entries are beautiful!

Abecedar:

Thanks for the report. Not to much for us in the fore-seeable future. Not to worry.

cornixt:

So-called biggest change in Warhammer, and it’s mostly 40K. Nice.

Bitterman:

FYI the “Night Lords character that is not Curze” is Sevatar, aka Jago Sevatarian.

Yodrin:

Wow, the GD entries looks fantastic!!! And what a banner…stunning…

Very nice Golden Demon Entries and Horus Heresy sneak peaks. That Solar Auxilia has got me a bit excited for both their looks and their background.
