Paining progress has been made just about every night for the past week… but it’s slow going with so many different pieces, which means there’s not much to be done to speed paint except line up everything that needs colour “X” and apply that, then go back and line up everything that needs the next colour…
The infusion work bench.
Assembling pieces for the forge and testing out the lighting on the left
And I’ve thrown the slaves into the lava pit so their life energy can be extracted
The deep freeze of our winter here in the Canadian prairies is (hopefully) behind us. One of the coldest winters in over 80 years. Not the kind of weather or priming or finish spraying so I often put things on hold.
Time to get back to the Daemonsmith’s Forge!
The main floor was never meant to be left as it was. I had a stack of plastic tiles that I was waiting for warm weather to be able to prime.
I trimmed and carved each of the plastic tiles to fit around details on the base, and I use painter’s tape to hold them down to a piece of cardboard for priming and painting. It wasn’t quite wide enough so I put the tiles from the far right over the middle section.
All of the tiles glued down.
View across the completed floor area (the back left corner is where the mine cart and tracks go so there’s not supposed to be tiles there).
Chipping away at all of the smaller detail pieces in my new vented spray booth. Much nicer for using the air brush as it maintains negative pressure in the spray area, ensuring that my hobby room doesn’t fill up with a dusting of spray.
Still working away at the weapon rack. So many small details. Would have been much easier to have painted everything individually and glued them in afterward x.x
Progress on the Daemonsmith Forge Master of Grungron Ankor Zharr
Wow, man what a project! Such a great idea, so many nice pieces (lammasu haeds on the doors are great!), this will look fantastic. It already does! Very excited to see it finished. :hat off
Amazing update. Great work on the tiles, and keep at it with the detailwork painting! Well worth the burdensome effort. And that Daemonsmith is utterly fantastic already!
Every time I look at your stuff Nico I get the feeling that I should really take some time and create similar stuff for 15mm. Great inspiration! :)
tjub
I totally think you should! It would be MUCH quicker to complete than some of my sprawling epics ;) :s x.x
A few small updates...
The cracked anvil. I finished this 5-6 months ago, but, as usual, once I finish something I move on and often forget to take completed pictures!
WIP Weapon rack, still LOTS of painting detail to add and I'm finding it slow going. I'm looking forward to having this finished as it'll get used in some campaigns for Warhammer Quest.
So here's a part that really slowed me down - I didn't know what to do with the handrails for the stairs. I knew I didn't want them to be the same metal/grey shade as a lot of the other parts, and given that they have a rather unique deamon-themed look to them I felt they needed to stand out instead of blend in. I just happened to have a few blues in front of me and decided to just see what happens. Didn't turn out too bad and sometimes that's just good enough :hat off Plus, the piece of very mono-tone overall except for a few accents here and there like the flames and chaos parts so this was a chance to add some colour back in.
This was another part I sat and stared at for a while and the night before last I decided to just try a heat/fire look to the iconography on the banner. Not too shabby and fits in well enough with the piece while still standing out on its own.
A couple more dead slaves. Orcs this time. I've also finished the mine cart and the buffer stop (left side). I have the tracks themselves finished (not shown), but I need to come up with a good way to mount and attach them.
Small detail piece - lower switch for the hoist system that's nearly painted.
Small detail piece #2 - upper switch for the hoist system. You can see the empty vertical spaces and the holes for the components of the hoist system which will be going in tonight, hopefully.
The Daemonsmith Master at his Forge, with lots of detail painting left to do on him.
Marvellous. Good going with adding colour to it, and I really like the dead Slaves at the lava pool. Such a striking visual! This really is a Daemonsmith’s laboratory.
As for skull slippers, much approved! I did this model with some kind of Daemon slippers, so I recognize the theme going on here.
Realized how I was going to attach my T-tracks to the board after seeing some push-pins I had saved from GH #13 (back in 2010!!). I used super glue to attach the pins to the inside edge track and used a “V”-shaped piece of grey plastic glued over top for a little extra support. Once dried I put some painter’s tape down and marked the width of the mine cart wheels and then just pushed the tracks down into place. One was a little crooked, but that just required pulling the track up and changing the angle. Nice and simple!
Here’s the tracks in situ, along with the buffer stop and the mine cart. Will this be an escape route for heroes in the future, or a way to sneak in? Perhaps will it be a route for the Daemonsmith to quickly have Hobgoblin slave reinforcements delivered if he’s in trouble?
I also finished the hoist chains and the visible part of the pulley wheel mechanism. This was the same chain and pulley system I used for AC#11 back in 2011 :hat off
Lots of detail painting last night. Everything is getting closer. All of the extra pipes and tubes for the forge are done and just need a little hot glue to hold them in place. So close!
Full cycle, Nico! This detailwork is amazing, and adds so much to the overall impression. Keep at it, it’s well worth all your immense labours! :hat off
The Daemonic Forge for Warhammer Quest is complete!
Overview: The base size is 7x10 (standard classic WHQ Objective rooms are 4x8 and the largest was 5x8 in the Orc expansion). This is a multi-level board with a lower/main level, ~3x10, two separate stairways that very between 1-square wide to 2-squares wide, and an upper forge level that comprises 5 squares. There’s also a smaller forge at the lower level. There is a mine cart passageway that exits to the rear of the board and a large lava pit ~2x2 squares in size. Both forges as well as the spirit conduit next to the main forge light up, and a battery pack is hidden within the base.
The lava pit contains slaves that have been sacrificed to the forge in various states of decomposition. The lava pit feeds into a large pipe that continues upward into the rock and feeds the forges. The rough-hewn area of the Daemonic Forge has been continuously modified over time. Never ceasing operation the addition of more venting, new delivery pipes, and diabolic machinery are retro-fitted on-the-fly as needed, leading to an overly complicated and complex layout of infrastructure.
Extra shots of the completed piece:
Last component to complete will be the Daemonsmith Forge Master himself, and I think I’ll save him for my main Chaos Dwarf army blog soon as he thematically fits better there
