I went to a hobby store today, and was really surprised.
Giant sign on the wall “WARHAMMER”… and all the miniatures hanging on the wall beneath it were Reaper Miniatures.
Signs in the miniature section: “All Warhammer GW Metals: 40% off!” which is the first time I have seen something like that, ever.
Anyway, it was strange. I was tempted to pick up an armful of centigors and other neat stuff - or even the older army books (7th ed.) they were selling for $5 each - but it was weird. Unfortunately, the plastic kits were still $42 each (ie. Vampire Counts skeletons), and I couldn’t find the finecast lamassu I was looking for.
Has the popularity of Warhammer decreased significantly? Maybe this store has just decided to stop being an independent carrier of GW products.
When independent stores in Sweden has stopped selling Warhammer (and therefore any wargame miniatures, since it’s the only game in town for brick and mortar stores over here), you generally see a generous price cut like that. We’ve made some neat purchases through the years that way. But for a hobby store to cut it and display Reaper miniatures instead…?
Peculiar. Was this limited to Warhammer Fantasy, or did it affect 40k as well? Have others spotted similar things elsewhere?

Haha, our local video store had a load of Regiments of Renown boxes in its shelves. While we were still quite new to the hobby and collecting different armies, we nevertheless picked up one or two of those RoR boxes because we liked the looks of them a lot, yet didn’t think we were in any rush to grab more. After all, they must be available at lots of other places, including the GW webstore, if they could be found at our local shop.
Then, at a local tournament, some players heard somewhere that these OOP relics of the past still existed in the stores of the video store, and bought everything. Since then, we haven’t been able to find any other place with Beorg’s Bearmean of Urslo etc. in the shelves. Talk about living with gold under your nose and never seeing it.
I will look for some metal daemonettes next time I go up there - if I see some, would you like me to pick them up for you?
There is also another store in a nearby town which looks like it is owned by a hoarder - there are tons of metal WHFB miniatures there. Probably because when I tried to look at them, I had to move a bunch of boxes and a shelving unit to get to where they were. They had an ‘Archaon’s Horde’ boxed set sitting on the shelf, as well as several other older version WHFB boxed sets, which I was tempted to pick up.
I keep hoping I’ll find a hidden stash of Chaos Dwarf minitatures… No luck so far, unfortunately.
My local hobby shop is still selling GW miniatures and normal prices, even those in what are pretty beaten-up blisters and boxes. At this stage, I don’t know if I would buy anything anyway, there is so little that I want.
My first chaos dwarf army was at the end of the Bighat dynasty as they were being discontinued. I found a local toyshop that was selling off blisters of them for less than half price, back in the day when you could grab a blister of 3 or 4 for a couple pounds. I soon had bought all of them in a couple of weeks and was well on my way to my first cd army.
