[Archive] Why use Ravening Hordes when we have LoA

Mosk:

I have been playing chaos dwarves actively since 2008 I love the ravening hordes list a lot. My question is what the general thoughts are about using the ravening hordes list when we have (possibly a more) official and newer list in the form of LoA.

What list do you all use and why do you use that list over the other? (I would like to keep this topic more specific in comparing use of LoA verse ravening hordes, I know there are several other lists floating around as well and I think these are great as well)

Bloodbeard:

As far as I know - GW hasn’t made an updated FAQ for ravening hordes in 8th ed. So I don’t think it’s usable anymore. Not after LoA came out.

Mosk:

Gw has not made an official update nor errata but I see we have made erratas here on this site. My question I guess is why are some of us (including myself) still trying to hold on to the ravening hordes list when the forge world LoA is official?

Admiral:

Because Legion of Azgorh is the latest, official Chaos Dwarf army list.

Because it is accepted on tournaments.

Because it contains most of the things which Ravening Hordes have plus goodies like K’daai, Skullcracker and Iron Daemon. Because of S4 and Blackshard armour core infantry. Because of Ashstorm coupled with Black Hammer of Hashut. Because of Hellcannon.

Despite undercosted K’daai Destroyer and Magma Cannon. Despite overcosted blunderbusses. Despite lack of Lore of Hashut for Daemonsmith Engineers.

And also because none of the lists are anywhere close to a full-on, army book complete list for Chaos Dwarfs, which would include Hobgobbo bolt throwers, Chaos Dwarf warriors and even more warmachines and bound Daemons. LoA still seem like the fullest of the two.

Those are the reasons why I use Legion of Azgorh instead of Ravening Hordes.

Hashut’s Blessing:

It’s down to perceived officiality, but if you want to use RH, by all means do so. We made an FAQ/errata to make it 8th edition compatible without changing the rules.

The reason to use RH over LoA would be largely down to fluff - if you prefer a more “traditionalist” or greenskinned army, go RH. If you prefer a more “progressive” elite/daemony army, go LoA.

IzNoGood:

Its down to choice and whether your opponent is happy to play against it, still a perfectly playable list IMHO. And obviously gives you unit options that you dont have in LoA.

LoA are an elite army both in game play and fluff, but expect something different if GW do revisit the Big Hats.

Personally I use LoA because I’ve got it, its accepted in tournaments and I have never really been forgiven for twin Earthshakers in RH.

Thommy H:

I’m not aware that anyone uses Ravening Hordes any more. There are only two units in it that don’t translate to LoA - Black Orcs and Hobgoblin Bolt Throwers - so unless you have a lot of those in your collection there’s no reason to use a decade old list. Frankly, an opponent is more likely to let you use those units as-is from the O&G book as Rare choices than they are to allow Ravening Hordes.

Lord Farfocel:

:hat

As stated before LoA is official so you can walk in anywhere in gworld pretty much uncontested… besides the ever-so-often derp and mewling from people who think FW is super-uber-overpowered…

IF you want to use close to RH, try doing a split and Orc and Goblin allies… you are both forces of destruction and opens a potential to super fluffy ideas… or do quirky super evil scientists convention list like Clan Skry and Dawi Zharr :yar

Baggronor:

Doubles Tournaments with LoA and OnGs is the way to go - then you can banter at each other all tournament too :cheers
