Well to Thommy H’s responce… I have one recommendation…
Check out something called Fair Use in the U.S. and Fair Dealing in the U.K.
Without them… I could write a book and then sue ANYONE for Infringing on my I.P. for even mentioning the slightest bit of information contained within it…
cornixt:
Well, fair use doesn’t cover the distribution of those materials. The only real issues identified in the wiki were pictures and a few files, although there were a few grey areas that we are still waiting for feedback on. None of the text was a direct copy, and it didn’t infringe on copyright. Unfortunately, there isn’t a straight forward way to remove those individual things, although I have an idea that might work.
Zaramuskharaz:
Ok then!
Let’s get drawning! YOU THERE! SLAVE!

Servius:
pictures are easily covered under fair use and fair dealing as long as they meet the 3 following conditions… there are other smaller ones but these are the major ones.
1: They are not in a resolution which could be reproduced in high quality. Usually they need to be pretty small… and usually below 1000px square in lower than 100 DPI. Most if not all the pics i remember seeing in the wiki meet that.
2: They must not have a uncopyrighted version or representation equal avaliable. (Now they cant force you to make your own… but can point you to one and then enforce a change)
3: They must be notated as being property of the respective company which hold the images as I.P.
Other considerations that fit in fair dealing are things like used in an educative manner, used in order to give commentary on, etc.
The Wiki easily can be posed as an educative tool. You can even place quotes from their background stories so long as it has a point to the topic in question… But again in moderation.
The WoH makes perfect sense, mainly due to the fact that in essence alot of their IP was being reproduced in high resolution.
BTW… I do alot of work on Wikipedia to kill time… And right now we have been working to get every image on the site properly sourced and resized to fit the Fair Use laws.
tjub:
Couldnt it just be CDO created images and links to solegends?
Thommy H:
1: They are not in a resolution which could be reproduced in high quality. Usually they need to be pretty small.. and usually below 1000px square in lower than 100 DPI. Most if not all the pics i remember seeing in the wiki meet that. The thumbnails might be, but the main images were full sized.
2: They must not have a uncopyrighted version or representation equal avaliable. (Now they cant force you to make your own.. but can point you to one and then enforce a change)I think you're applying this more broadly than it should be applied. Just because "there's no uncopyrighted alternative" doesn't give us (or anyone else) carte blanche to make available what we want. That's certainly not how it works on wikipedia.
3: They must be notated as being property of the respective company which hold the images as I.P.They weren't, but even if they were I don't think it would be enough.
Ancient History:
With Thommy on this one. Games Workshop has a fairly extensive list of guidelines up for fans, and we need to abide by them.
Tarrakk Blackhand:
Does anyone have access to that list of GW approved guidelines? I think it would be interesting to post a link to it.
(Pyrostick probably knows which thread it’s in, so I hope he can fogive my ignorance as I don’t know where it’s located and I’m probably wasting his time…again.)
Thommy H:
Haha - you’re not allowed to get a GW tattoo.
To be fair, if you’re the sort of person who would permanently mark themselves with something connected to a game of toy soldiers, IP lawyers are the least of your problems.
Kera foehunter:
lol like gw have any hearts or butterfly tattoos
Tarrakk Blackhand:
So I can’t get a Chaos Dwarf Tattoo? I wonder if they’ll let me put a “Games Workshop” logo on my car for publicity reasons - my store, Monster Hobbies. I’d hate to have the C&D department make me replace a hood or trunk lid because it has GW on it.
OMG! Just read the link and WOW! You can’t do anything, even show painted models, unless you credit GW. So all the things I’ve been doing, like you-tube movies, taking pics of models, etc, are all illegal and immoral based on their IP laws.
The Tattoo one is funny. I’d like to see a GW lawyer try and rip one off some big biker dude. LOL!
Kera foehunter:
i don’t think the copy right of ford motor co. well let you
cornixt:
Their actual rules go further than can be enforced by the laws in most countries, and they bank on people not being willing or rich enough to fight them in court. It’s a pretty common thing to do, music/movie publishers are the most obvious others that do the same thing.
Thommy H:
The one that struck me as the least enforceable was the one about combining their models with the models of third-party manufacturers. I don’t think Games Workshop telling me I can’t glue together two objects I own would stand up in court…
