GW will never lower the core prices on any products, i have been collecting since 97 and have never known them to go down only up, i even remember once a very long time ago that GW had a sale at my local store this must have been 98 the only time i have seen such a thing happen, it will not happen again of that i am sure, its a shame as it would be nice for them to have at least some price reductions at least once to reward the loyal customer base that they have rather than squeezing more out of us

Hmm, I remember starter sets costing 75 dollars and now they are 60 dollars and at one time were even 50 dollars.. They have lowered their price and in fact there's more in it now for the dollar amount.
The only time I can remember GW having a sale was when they moved from Lead to white metal and that wasa long long time ago.
What they are doing though is making lots of plastic which make sit cheaper to collect than the metal equivalent - whilst not a price cut per se it is a cost reduction for certain units of certain armies
I’m not going to argue that GW don’t put their prices up, as they do. So do most companies, unless they start outsourcing production to parts foreign with few labour laws.
I’m also not going to argue that any given price rise is above inflation, as they do. However, these are usually non-annual on the same product and are constrained by the practicalities of the “price point” system such retail environments work under.
Further, comparing them with Reaper is a non-starter as they have differing distribution models. Reaper don’t have their own retail arm, so a price change is very local. GW changing prices is a serious logistical matter which would potentially wipe-out the savings. This is the inertia of the large business.
Further, they are a PLC and so if they don’t make 10% more profit than the year before, the market considers them to have made a “loss”.
What it would mean in practicality, however, is that GW don’t have to raise prices as much next time, IF the tin prices stay down.
The problem with all these co . They think we own them!! and they think we will always buy there stuff !! In tuff times things change quick!! As seen on T.V.
I can’t see them lowering their prices either. GW do seem to be making a lot more plastic models these days which are cheaper than metal ones. eg before Chaos Warriors were re-released the old metal Marauder Horsemen were $75NZ. The new plastic ones are $40NZ. I seriously hope GW will make plastic Centigors when Beastmen are re-done, they are $105NZ! Ridiculous, I won’t be getting any until they’re plastic!
I think the high cost of GW miniatures creates a bar or gauge that many of the other miniature companies use to help price their product (other then the obvious cost of production). In a lot of ways, GW asks around 30% more for their product (where there is a comparable product). Exceptions to this are for very unique character and monster models, especially when Resin is used. Even when you look at Resin pieces, Forge World runs closer to 40% more then their competitors pieces.
I just have little patience with GW prices. I have been able to ebay (bits & pieces) and sculpt a nearly 4000 point CD army for around $300 US in the past 6 months. The only GW products I have bought from the store, movement trays (I could have just as easily made them).
It’s odd when you say “comparable product” being that much lower. I’m not saying your wrong, I’d just like to know what you’re classifying as a “comparative product”.
The product in question is not just the figure size, sculpt and quality, but the fact that it is made in a country with a proper minimum wage, labour laws, environmental protections, etc.
Obviously, this narrows down their competition significantly, and I’ve never seen any significant price difference when analysed this way myself.
You can buy a hero model from Reaper for (most of the time) between $5.00 and $7.00, but a GW charter model will run you $10.00-$15.00 depending on where you buy it. If you look at GW’s 5 model metal packs rank and file run you $4.40 each and command $5.00 each, where you can get reaper model packs that will rung you anywhere from $3.25 a model to $4.44 each.
There are companies like Avatar of War that just make nice character models and those are often more then GW models. Ultraforge miniatures (from Canada) makes very nice resin models (come cleaned with imperfections in moldings filled) often well below anything forgeworld would consider pricing at. GW is one of the pricier players out there, I think their higher prices create a fair bit of wiggle room for other companies to release models at lower prices.
That being said, I usually buy the GW model (or have in the past), but I usually snag them off ebay and let someone else eat the retail price. I have a large DOW army with most original metal models, except the ones I have built.
Fair points, but Reaper are in the US which counts it out on the minimum wage/environment/labour law front. They are produced over here under license my Minifigs, and when done so, we see the Reaper figures comming in at maybe 10% cheaper, rather than the 50% in your example.
I’m not saying GW aren’t expensive, but when given a fair price comparison, they’re par for the course.
There has been quite a few rumours floating around the forums of a possible price rise in the next year, any one hear any thing about it?
This_Is_My_Boomstick!!
There are? please site your sources. I frequent quite a few forums and not a one of them has had any whisperings.. Although, it has been 2 years since the price increase, so it could happen.
