[Archive] Wolfriders

Loidrial:

I will play tomorrow a friendly match for finally go back into the game.

The friend I’m going to play against with will have lizards.

Here you people always wrote to use khan on wolf for chaff (is it called like this the unit worth few points that is needed for redirect charges and get some eventually shot at?) instead of the unit of hobs wolfrider.

Here my question is a simple why?

I get that the hero doesnt test for animosity, but then? what else?

Why should I prefer one single model to an eventual unit?

Is it just a filler?

I tried to understand but I missed some info apparently.

(Asking all of this because that friend said that usually you use a skirmisher unit or some fast and cheap stuff for those redirections of charges)

TheHoodedMan:

a) animosity

b) higher ld

c) lower points cost

d) Khans have great stats for their points and you can equip them with minor magic items

e) You can join the Khan in any units and pop them out when needed

can I let join a mounted hero into a foot unit? where will the hero go? front rank?
what about the base size difference?

and the hero will get 1shotter by almost everything, what is the point of invest 60+ points in something like this I still dont see :(

Vantraxx the Thrice Cursed:

They don’t come from your rare percentages.

they are very manouverable being single characters.

Can have magic items.

lower frontage so less things can attack…

They can attack and redirect more units if you have multiples.

As Vantrayy wrote.
It would help to have a rulebook ;-).
You can join them. If base sizes don`t match you join them at the side of the unit, front rank.
You move them in front of for example skullcrushers. position is that they can`t move around him. So they have to charge or swift reform and loose a lot of time.
Angle is that when they charge that the enemy is led away from where he wants to go.
You do this three times and the skullcrushers/ iron guts/ K`daii destroyer/ savage orcs see melee in turn5 or 6 instead of turn 2 or 3.

edit: If that works it`s called "redirecting". When you play a destroyer you`ll soon experience how others want to use this.

sam585:

Basically, you only take wolf riders if you want to have another drop. But in our expensive elite force it is hardly worthwhile.

Wolf riders struggle with doing the things a Khan can just breeze through, mainly because a khan has better WS,S,T, and just a more potent attack output.

More important is that a Khan is cheaper than 5 naked wolf riders, and both can vanguard.

That is 60pts to delay a Gutstar for a turn. 60pts to send those Skullcrushers in the wrong direction with a forced overrun so you can flank them. He can run at war machines and draw fire. He can kill other chaff quite well due to WS4, Str4 and T4. He can kill that annoying spirit host if you give him a 5pt magic weapon. He can tie up Iron Daemons. Give him Dragonhelm and he ties up someone else's Destroyer or Irondrakes or anything with flaming attacks. He is fast enough to charge the weaker chariots in the game before they charge your troops and can often beat them with a bit of luck. He can charge into contact with enemy characters in units to stop them Making Way and killing your troops for a round or two. He can challenge out powerful enemies or accept challenges from WoC filth characters to save your BSB/Prophet, etc. If he has nothing better to do, just hang around and wait to charge down fleeing enemies that your dwarfs fail to catch.
He doesn't panic when he gets shot, he either dies or carries on. He doesn't spontaneously take panic tests due to Animosity (dumbest rule ever). He has a tiny footprint and joins units. He is completely expendable. He is fun to use.

For 60pts he is a legend. And you can take more than one.
