EuphoricMelody:
Hi,
Would it be illegal to make casts of OOP model’s? I mean, as long they’re not used by, or sold to anyone else. Alsohypothectially speaking, if you did make e.g. resin casts, and it was illegal, wouldanyone even notice after they’d been painted? (btw i don’t have any money to do this and i already have almost all the CD’s i want/need for my army, so it’s just out of interest).
Swissdictator:
I would have to assume yes, it would be.
It’s one thing if you’re making something in the same style or that would look at home next to them, but not to make copies itself. Fair use policy does not apply here I would say.
Ubertechie:
Without a doubt yes - however if you used them for your own purposes and never tried to use them at a GW store or event you would be okay.
However no-one here would really sanction it as it is at best a quick way to devalue the expensive collections several of us have (myself included)
Neil:
Yes, it is absolutely most definitely illegal, and every now and then GW prosecute someone for doing it - they have a team dedicated to spotting this sort of thing. Normally its people making casts of things and selling them on e-bay.
You can spot copies if you know what to look for, even if they are metal (I am pretty sure most of my Sneaky Gits, which I bought on Ebay are fakes), but this becomes much harder if they are painted and based. it would be possible to spot resin models simply by picking them up (and if there was still any doubt dropping them).

Well, the dedicated team is really looking for people who makes fakes and sells them as real goods (or in deed selling them at all). It's totally illegal and I don't recommend trying. There's some weird twist to copyright law that seems to say if you let someone cast an OOP miniature then the whole production lien is open to abuse. (I guess this isn't exactly how it does work, but from the usual explanations that's the conclusion I'd draw).
Of course drop any of my miniatures and you are not reporting back to anyone about it...
Willmark:
Sorry to say that the topic of casting miniatures is not something we can condone or even let be discussed in a public forum. GW is protective of their IP and rightly so.
Whether or not it is OOP is also likewise irrelevant as for the reasons previously mentioned.
Also if the are any other questions let me know via PM and I can answer them.
