So I wanted to make a unit of Chaos Trolls, but I am not too fond of the metal miniatures. I wanted to evoke the classic troll look, but still make them look like they are creatures of Chaos.
Using some left over River Troll heads that I got from a friend, and the Spawn body that has feet (not hooves) I was able to make this Proof of Concept.
I am quite happy with the result. It’s mostly just a leg repositioning that was done. I want to make their posture fairly squat. Right now his legs are pinned with a bit of room for bending. I plan to smooth out his leg joints with greenstuff once I am happy with the positioning.
As for weapons, I am thinking I might want to give them two handed weapons like the chaos trolls that were converted from Stone Trolls in the old Realms of Chaos book (The 2nd Chaos Army Book). If I go for this look, I might add some spikes/spines up their back and add some fur as well.
I have not completely decided however, and I’d be open to suggestions and advice.
Not bad. I do rather like these more then the metal ones I have to admit. But to be honest I think you could have taken the ones with hooves and just swap the feet with the river trolls feet. So will you be adding more mutant chaosy bitz to them?
I am not sure what I will do about the feet. I might sculpt some larger feet. You could use the ones with hooves. But I don’t have any spare troll feet. Keep in mind these are left over troll heads (the kit comes with extras).
I don’t think I want to make them too mutated. But some spikes will probably protrude from their backs.
I love them. Saw some artwork of one in a GW book that looked similar this morning but can’t remember which book it was. I’ll let you know if I remember though. However, never seen it done in an actual model before, and it looks amazing.
Looks absolutley awesome. Obviously, for your tastes you can ignore it, but I see no reason for people to not use the behooved legs. It’s a minor mutation compared to many things and is one of the most common kinds. Means you can get two out of each Spawn box.
Certainly something to consider using myself (handy to have an all-plastic Throgg army, lol).
I’m not a fan of the metal chaos trolls and generally don’t like Warhammer trolls, but this works in my opinion. I actually think the chaos troll bodies make better looking spawn than trolls.
Do you plan to add some armour plates on him? Spiked shoulderpads would look cool.
