[Archive] Xander's Silly Golden Hat #8 Project Diary

Xander:

Tuesday, January 27th:
Ambassador’s log, Zharr-date 200901.27: I began work on my secret Golden Hat Eight project. I began by drawing out blue prints using a pen and paper.

After competition, I began to built up the machine using plasticard and super glue (with accelerant).  Gale Force Nine provides all three of these tools, and I have been very satisfied with their effectiveness.

Satisfied with my night’s effort, I began to plan out the rest of the design, choosing which parts and bits I would need.

Wednesday, January 28th:
Ambassador’s log, Zharr-date 200901.28.  After discovering that I had misplaced my supply of green stuff and that I was running short of accelerant, I decided a trip to the local hobby shop was in order.  I called ahead to ensure they’d be open after I left work; they would be.

I picked up a pack of Gale Force Nine green stuff and super glue accelerant. GF9 FTW! Perhaps I should get sponsored by them.  The store lacked Chaos Knights, which I also wanted to buy.  This poor shop still prices their GW product in the old Canadian pricing scheme, which means I was unlikely to buy GW product from them anyway.

Thursday, January 29th:
Ambassador’s log,  Zharr-date 200901.29: Having decided on some bits that I will need, and noticing I do not have enough.  I took a visit to my friend’s place to acquire some additional bits and pieces.  My friend graciously donated the means for my project to continue.

Friday, January 30th:
Ambassador’s log,  Zharr-date 200901.30: I began the day by working on my project for 20 minutes or so.  I am excited by the progress, and with the acquired means to continue, I am excited at the prospect of continuing tonight.

Ambassador’s log, supplemental: I decided to start a silly blog about the progress of my work, being careful not to reveal my secrets.

Ambassador’s log, supplemental: Continuing from the morning’s work I was able to complete some components for the machine.  I will continue this work tomorrow.

Saturday, January 31st:
Ambassador’s log,  Zharr-date 200901.31: Having spent the better part of the day working on my project I have completed all the basic components for the machine.  I was able to start some gap filling and detailing with Green Stuff that I purchased on Wednesday.  Tomorrow I hope to continue work on the detailing, with any luck, most of it will be done by the day’s end.

Sunday, February 1st:
Ambassador’s log, Zharr-date 200902.1: Super Bowl Sunday!  While watching the game I continued th detailing work with a bunch of green stuff.  I also worked on building up some of the more complex components through gluing together some smaller ones.  At this stage, the conversion and modeling work stands at about 80% complete.  I am looking forward to tomorrow’s work which should bring me even closer to the completion of the model.

Wednesday, February 4th:
Ambassador’s log, Zharr-date 200902.4: I’ve spent the last two nights taking a break from my conversion to work on some Warriors of Chaos, and I am pleased with how things are proceeding with them.  The Chaos Knight boxed set is great!  I was among those who felt the Chaos Knight models were too busy and varied such that they didn’t look like a coherent unit, and rather like a pack of characters.  Since I really liked the old metal Chaos Knights, I decided to model my knights based on those.  Taking regular Chaos Warrior capes and using a barbeque lighter, I was able to heat up and bend the cape to be draped over the rear of the horse.  I then attached the torsos (separated from the legs) to the cape and then to the Knight legs for a fairly simple, but effective, conversion.  The plus side is that the conversion leaves me with 5 pairs of Chaos Warrior legs, and 5 Knight Torsos, their shoulder pads, weapons, and shields: excellent ingredients for plastic Chosen!  I’ve now completed 5 Knights and 5 Chosen. Pics forthcoming!

Tuesday, February 10th:
Ambassador’s log, Zharr-date 200902.10: I completed my unit of 10 Chosen Chaos Warriors complete with a full command. I converted 2 to have Extra Hand Weapons, 2 with Halberds, and two with Hand Weapon and Shield.   I put whichever two I want to equip the unit with in the front rank beside the 3 command models.  :)

I finally kicked my rump into GH#8 action once again as well, I added yet more details with Green Stuff onto the machine.  It’s coming along really nicely; I am extremely pleased.  With any luck, I will be able to sculpt on some of the final touches tonight and have this baby ready to prime before the week is out.

In the mean while, I might try to get some pics of my Chaos stuff up for comments.

Wednesday, February 11th:
Ambassador’s log, Zharr-date 200902.11: After a furious bout of sculpting I have completed almost all of the modeling work!  I need to make and glue on two small gear pieces, and it’s essentially complete!!  I am really happy with the piece, and I have taken several WIP pictures which will be available after the contest ends. :)  I will begin priming tomorrow and painting will commence on the weekend!  This should give me a full two weeks time to paint the piece! Once the parts are painted, I will then assemble them on the base I am now constructing. I will likely model up some crewman tomorrow as well.

Tuesday, February 17th:
Ambassador’s log, Zharr-date 200902.17: I decided to hold off on the paint-on-primer in favour of grabbing my Spray Primer.  I also grabbed a bunch of paints from my home stash and brought them back to my apartment.  Tonight I aim to take a bunch of pre-paint pictures of my final conversion, then prime it and start painting!

Monday, February 23th:
Ambassador’s log, Zharr-date 200902.23: So I sat down Saturday morning with my primed War Machine and my set of paints and went to work!  I painted all day long!  After making some good progress, I decided that I should be done the War Machine itself by the end of the weekend.  I held true to that goal!  Now on to the crew! I had an idea of what I wanted for the crew, and they are half done being converted.  Once finished, I shall prime them and begin painting them!  I figure they will only take a single night to complete and I will be finished my entry!  After that I might paint up some bits and bobs and add some details to the final product.

GRNDL:

If you’re not going to reveal your secrets, what’s the point of the blog? You need to have juicy reading material for the punters, else they’ll stop reading.

I have a feeling you’ll spend too much time blogging and not enough time modelling, thereby missing the deadline… Or the reverse: too much time modelling and the blog becomes a lower priority, destined to be forgotten…

re: Superglue accelerator.

Does this really help? I usually just end up dunking the join/model into water to do the same thing. After all, superglue sets when no air can get to it.

Now back to you

"Dear diary…"

Xander:

I used to fuss around with plastic glue… what a mistake. I used to hold super glued pieces for 30 seconds or more, what a mistake.

Now I stick two pieces and have a 3rd party spray the joint, and I can instantly put it down. For plastics, I glue pieces together and if they have a semi-decent hold, spray, and it’s a perfect hold.

The accelerant literally changed the way I model my miniatures. Since I started using it, I have never looked back.

The silly blog is one part excitement-at-my-entry, one part silly-fun and one part hype-for-the-contest! I aim to keep it on everyone’s mind so they don’t forget about it!

Ishkur Cinderhat:

(Note to self: make warmachine 10 times bigger now to stand a chance against Xander’s upcoming behemoth!)

Xander
sounds like my martinis. yummmmm *hiccup* well, it's got 3 parts anyways....

and yah, Xander, I thought you were an old James Bond movie with all those product spots :P

Ishkur is entering? Can I announce winners now? lol ;)

GRNDL, I like the stuff... and I don't really know what it was like before, but it's easy. How do you dunk it in water if it isn't set? like, won't the process of dunking separate it?

Swissdictator:

Ishkur: Build a life size one. A warhammer guy from our state built a working trebuchet.

Kera foehunter:

well im not much of a reader could you post picture to

can’t wait to see the finsh project!!

Xander:

We made Trebuchets and catapults in Grade 12 physics. My friend and I made the Legopult. It was awesome.

GRNDL:

@sojourn

You just hold it together and the exposed superglue undergoes a chemical reaction making it set on contact with the water. Its possible that something else is happening that looks like its set, but hasn’t. I dunno. As far as I’m concerned most superglues work almost instantly anyway, so an accelerator seems superfluous. I use Loctite gel-flow superglue, so its possible mine just rocks.

Xander:

Ya, gel is better contained. But ya, like I said, it changed the way I hobby, fundamentally.

Log updated.

I’ve finished mine now I just need to find out whats my photobucket password

Reading this Xander I don’t think my machine has a hope in hell in winning

Kera foehunter:

maybe there be a special guest one could only hope

Willmark:

Sounds like this Golden hat is going to be monstrous in every sense of the word.

Don't worry, I think we're in the same boat.

Though it'll be exciting to see what he comes up... and then blows us straight to Hashut's domain with.

Kera foehunter:

im not giving up hope !!! there is always a bigger fish!!
