I’ve recently been reading a topic over on warseer about 500 point games and campaigns which got me wondering about how chaos dwarfs would cope. Example rules for this points would be:
1 hero up to 125 points (no bsb)
3+ units max 25 models each
0-1 special or rare unit
Here’s my attempt without using hobgoblins:
Legion of Azgorh 500 (Chaos Dwarfs)
Heroes - 125
Chaos Dwarf Infernal Castellan (125)
Great weapon; Luckstone; Dragonhelm.
Core - 272
10 Chaos Dwarf Infernal Guard (142)
Overseer; Standard Bearer.
10 Chaos Dwarf Infernal Guard (130)
Standard Bearer.
Special - 100
Deathshrieker Rocket Launcher (100)
499 points
My attempt with hobgoblins (hope they don’t flee!)
At 500pts magic and range attacks become very important. The restrictions you have provided are pretty tough, but needed as many people would just throw down one mega unit with a character in it.
I’d run something like this
Daemonsmith
- Level 1
- Enchanted Shield
- dawnstone
= 125pts
10 Infernal Guard
- Fireglaives
= 170pts
20 Hobgoblins
- Musician
- Bows
= 104pts
Deathshrieker Rocket
= 100pts
TOTAL 499pts
Gives you 2 units of shooting plus the rocket/smith combo. In combat the guard are still a tough nut to crack under these type of restrictions.
- Daemonsmith Sorcerer (105pts) Charmed Shield, luck stone Lore of Fire, Wizard Level 1
-25 Hobgoblins Bow,Handweapon, Shield, Light armour. full command (159.5pts) -20 Hobgoblins Bow,Handweapon, Shield, Light armour. full command (132pts)
-1 DeathShrierker (100pts)
Total 496.5 this would give some awesome shooting (and fire ball magic) especially is you roll 6es for the animosity tests. wouldnt be real fun for a campaign I think but 500 points is not much. [/edit]
It does seem to be quite hard just to fit the restrictions! Another restriction I saw was to disallow stubborn as it could be overpowered at this level. We’re buggered!
It does seem to be that a Daemonsmith with a couple ranged units is the way forward. what about this as no one has used fireborn yet:
Yep, the only thing rare you can take is wolf raiders!
How about:
Daemonsmith, Fire 20 Hobgoblins, bows 20 hobgoblins, additional hand weapons, standard 3 bull centaurs, great weapons, ba’hal, standard (banner of slavery) 498 points
Hobgoblins ItP, and bull centaurs for a nice big punch in the face!
Or for blunderbuss fun: Daemonsmith, Fire 14 Infenal guard, blunderbusses, standard 20 hobgoblins 5 wolf raiders 497 points
Don’t move. Shoot and magic stuff (2 fireballs a turn, oh yes) until it stops moving. Rinse and repeat until they get to your lines and hope you’ve done enough damage. Warmachines are a big risk I think.
20 hobbos w/bows, muso 104 20 hobbos w/bows, muso 104 10 infernal guard, fireglaives 170

Hmmm, i think this bring the total to over 500pts? D.smith cost is 125, not 115. So 503 pts total. I like the idea with double fireball tho! Maybe drop a musician in one of the hobbos regiments to bring the total to 499? :)
Haven’t got my brb with me, I was trying to remember the points cost, thought it was 95+15+5=115. But if it is, then yes, dropping a musician would bring it back in line.
Please watch the explicit break downs on individual item and upgrade point costs. I know it’s hard to avoid doing when we’re discussing army lists and making modifications, just keep an eye on it is all Thanks!
On a slightly related topic here… I’m also enjoying the 500pt ideas. Our group here had discussed this a while ago and I think we’re finally going to get some games in this month so I’m going to have to start paying more attention here!
Wolf raiders either redirect, hold up an enemy unit, take out chaff/warmachines/singel characters or stay back for a counter charge once the enemy reaches your line.
Hobbos and lvl 1 tries to take out as many as they can. IG with great weapon should be able to take on anything that fireballs and bows can’t take out (T4+).
