Hi. I’m planning to adapt the Tzarli Factory round basalt columns to square bases. Do you think they’d look better with the flat sides of the columns running parallel to the sides of the bases or askew? Here’s a couple examples of cuts I could make for 60x100mm bases.
I can see myself agonizing over this decision. I’m leaning askew.
Mmm, angled is a bit more dynamic. You’ll just have to be sure that if you’re ranking them the angle and direction are the same for all models or it will look wonky.
Askew will look better. Our brains are drawn to repeating sequences so if the hexagons all line up with the base edge then any small imperfections with that will stick out like a sore thumb, but when askew it will prevent that.
It also looks oddly artificial when anything lines up with the edge of a base - we know it is, but we don’t want it to look that way.
Thanks for the advice, guys. I decided to go with askew. I then wasted time trying to cut them so that they would look like a continuous sheet of basalt when ranked up. This would only work if I cut them parallel and resized them just right. Or kept them all in the same position relative to each other at all times. Anyway, that all seems way too orderly for Chaos, so I’m just going askew and not worrying about the rest. Here’s how the first ones are looking. I plan to cut away the higher blocks toward the front of the bases after printing.
