Beginner Painter Seeks Chaos Dwarf Painting Advice)_

Hello everyone, I’m new here.

I’m very happy to have joined the Chaos Dwarfs community!

I’m looking to acquire some Chaos Dwarf miniatures and paint them, and since this is all new to me, I wanted to ask for your advice. Are there any painting tricks or anything similar I should know about? What colors should I use, and what kind of paint should I buy (preferably something not too expensive, since this is my first time trying this)?

Thank you to everyone who responds to my message. Glory to Hashut!

Cheers mate, welcome and well met! How great that you’ve found your way here.

Ok, so just to recap: you have currently no experience with miniature painting and you’re starting from scratch, right? So no equipment and no models? Great, this is a fantastic hobby and I’m sure you’ll love it.

The internet is full with more paint guided and other material than you could ever need. YouTube offers detailed guides for every level that you can just follow.

For your situation, you’ll need some kind of starter set. There are many paint ranges and almost all of them offer some kind of bundle. you’ll need maybe 8-10 basic paints, kind of like a watercolour-set many of us used in school. Miniature painting is usually done with Acryllic paint. You also need a brush obviously, and that one does not even have to be as small as you might think. You’ll need clippers or some kind of hobby knife to clean up models and some kind of spray primer for an initial coat of paint before you start.

Now some more questions before we’ll get to the details:

Where do you live? Is there a hobby store in the area or are we talking online shopping?

How do you get the models? Do have access to a 3D printer or will you buy models at said hobby store or online?

If you’re completely diving into the miniature painting hobby as a whole, it might be a good idea to start with something like this:

This set contains a simple brush and ten colours. These are a special kind of colour (all major paint brands carry a paint line like this), where you only apply one coat over a grayscale model and you’re essentially done. Once you get the hang of it, it is always possible to come back to a model and spend another day on it to take it many steps further. But as a starting point, this technique is a great way. Here is a YouTube video explaining it:

In addition to the paint set above, all you’d need is a can of black spray primer and a can of white/gray/beige spray primer.

Thank you for your reply!

Yes, I’m a beginner miniature painter, but I have some experience from art school, so I don’t think I’ll have any major problems.

I live in Moscow, the capital of Russia, so I don’t think I’ll have any issues with purchasing supplies. I’m planning on buying the miniatures from the СРМ online store (in Russian).

Thanks again for your help!

Excellent, have fun then! Excited to see your progress. Keep us posted

Super good call on the army painter, the starter set, both warpaint fanatic and speedpaints are awesome to start.

This is basically how I’m tackling my empire remnant army after 15y of hiatus and it’s working great.
