Changeable terrain tiles

Hello,

Besides being a warhammer fan and gamer I am also an avid model railroader. As a result I’ve developed a lot of terrain skills over the years: rock carving, tree making, water features and the like. Any recommendations on making interchangeable terrain tiles? I had three thoughts and was interested in any feedback:

  1. Use 2x2 foot extruded pink foam as a base then wooden dowels to make sure they align and prevent movement during game play. Though alignments of different tiles could be tricky when changing.
  2. A large wood base with sides. This is least preferred as I don’t have much storage space. I live in a 1930s house.
  3. Similar to the above but have the base wood board split into two halves, then attach together with a latch prior to adding the tiles. Seems like over engineering (according to my 10 year old chief advisor).

My biggest concern is preventing the tiles from shifting during a battle.

Thank you.

So, back in the day I started working on my own board and basically tried to copy the Gw 2x2 modular board. That project got eventually abandoned. For aligning the boards I planned on using magnets. All four sides would have gotten magnets in each corner, always with the same polarity in the left corner and the other one on the right. Then they would snap together in all directions. And the magents maybe would have come handy with storage some way.

Using magnets is a very interesting idea. Could be better than the wooden dowels.
